They just about achieved Nickleback levels by cranking out cheesy pseudo-Christian songs that got popular. Not afraid to admit jr high me bought the My Own Prison Cd.

Yeah in retrospect wtf was I thinking, but I remember it coming on the alternative stations and my little church friends were listening to it too and it sounded dark and edgy.

There are a lot of things to criticize Creed for before hating on My Own Prison.

Playing up the “Christian” angle was genius. I respect them for that at least.

This made me

Creed, like Nickelback, somehow became "cool" to hate on. Like outta nowhere the world just decided to make a meme of how bad both were and it took off like wildfire. I don't think either band is that good or anything but there are millions of musical groups out there that are worse. And as a middle schooler human clay was a pretty solid album imo

I like the band part of Creed, which I think became Alter Bridge, it was just that singer that was so awful.

Creed became hated because Scott tried to market himself as a Christian and used Christian imagery and themes to sell albums, but was extremely hypocritical in his personal life while also being a major diva off stage. These antics made him easy to face. Since his voice is so unique, internet critics couldn’t separate Scott the douchebag from Creed the band, and as music tastes in the late 2000’s shifted away from grunge and pop punk to more folky and synthy pop sounds (grunge became uncool and lame like hair metal was for kids in the 90’s) they suddenly found themselves on hipster shite lists.

Nickelback hate started in a similar fashion. I believe it goes back to Avril Lavigne leaving the front man of Sum 41, Deryck Whibley (he was the sk8ter boy who made things so complicated)for Nickelback front man Chad Kroeger. The pair of Canadians got famous writing songs about each other, and were sorta a music power couple in their time. A lot of crazy conspiracy theories popped up around Avril leaving Deryck as her music had a sudden shift in tone, her face suddenly looked very different from plastic surgery, and of course, insert Chad. A theory that Avril had been killed and replaced by an imposter were rife, and that Deryck figuring this out, but no one believing him, drove him insane to the point of OD’ing, nearly dying, and having to go to rehab. Sum 41 broke up for a while, Avril’s career tanked, and a lot of people blamed Chad at a time when Nickelback was churning our hits in the same formula as their previous albums. Once you become cool to hate, it snowballs. Chad killed Avril and Sk8ter Boy, so therefore, Nickelback sucks

Canadians, man

Shinedown was just as overexposed as both of those bands of the same era and isn’t near as hated because their singer is usually super nice to fans and doesn’t have a reputation for being a douche, hypocrite, or diva.

I actually have more respect for Creed than Nickleback or 3 Doors Down. Creed was the original and those bands were cheap imitators.

I can also get on board with some cheesy rock at times.

My hs marching band did an Evanescence themed competition halftime show

Throw in Tool and Audioslave, and that’s pretty much the extent of what was popular when I was in hs.

They were in that first wave of rock that was divorced roots- wise from the American blues movement. They may have stole Jimmy Page riffs but they didn’t steal Robert Plant riffs. So their music lacks the soul the great bands have. That said, Mark is a remarkable guitarist . His style just doesn’t pay homage to the American tradition and so most people will acknowledge the technical wizardry but still want it wrapped around something with more “ heart”. And of course people who hate Creed aren’t likely to give Alter Bridge an honest listen.

Pretty sure grunge beat them to it by almost a decade.

Those bands evolved from Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam.

Rap/metal was a thing years before with House of Pain and Anthrax teaming up for “Bring the Noise”
