UK decides "herd immunity" the way to go...

The UK has opted to tackle the virus with a "herd immunity" approach rather than social distancing. They practically want the virus to spread and are banking on it being so rampant that the population as a whole eventually becomes immune. Interesting approach...almost seems like something USA would have done 10-15 yrs ago before we started our shift to socialism...

Sadly I think this is the better way to do it. Medical experts are saying we're all going to get it at some point. Just have us all get it and that way we get it out of our system sooner and our system becomes immune.
The social isolation they want us to do is not going to stop this virus at all. It's just going to string the whole thing out and shut down our economy even longer. Even though I'm asthmatic part of me wants the virus just to get it over with.

Dr. Fauci at the presser yesterday was saying the USA goal is a very flat curve. Going to go on longer but be less dramatic.
The Brits are taking the opposite approach. A very tall, spiky, curve over a shorter duration.
However, if you observed Dr. Fauci's hand gestures, he also described somewhat of a repetitive curve with peaks and valleys plural. This goes along with the suspicion of possible repetitive infection by the virus instead of one-and-done herd immunity. The Brits may be on a roller coaster ride while the USA has a more prolonged hill to travel across.

With the lack of tests the US is doing, we may accidentally do herd immunity.

That also means all of the people that will get critically ill from this (elderly, those with other health issues) will also all get it all at once and overwhelm our healthcare system.
Then what happens if you need ICU care for something else not even related to coronavirus (say you got into a bad car accident) but all the ICUs are full of coronavirus patients?

Best hope under reinfection is seasonality and enough of a herd response toward tolerance, like the common cold. We tolerate colds for the most part, having enough immune response to prevent serious illness, but yet may have some sick days off and on.

How can you do herd immunity when you aren't immune after infection? There have been several cases of reinfection already

The purpose of social distancing is to spread the infection over time so medical services don’t get overwhelmed. What the Brits are proposing is likely to cause catastrophic rationing of medical care.

Everyone dumps on the UK for their government healthcare but now suddenly thinks relying on that same system is the best idea ever.

Yeah but that would only be for a short period of time right? With the USA approach, if we have a lengthened curve one could very easily argue that for non Covid ICU care the USA method is MORE dangerous as instead of 2-3 weeks of overworked healthcare we will have 2-3 months.

We will end up doing the same thing: infection slows, everything opens back up, infection spikes, everything closes, rinse and repeat until infection reaches an inflection point like the seasonal flu. It's just going to become a part of our lives at this point.
