So far just over 30 people have died from Covid-19 in the United States. Most of the victims came from nursing homes in Washington. To put in context, according to the CDC as of March 6th, 20,000 Americans have died so far this year from the common flu with 350,000 hospitalizations.

Why does this keep getting posted?

You’re literally weeks behind with this comparison

And, the flu has never overwhelmed medical services in multiple countries.

If Trump does nothing, and that happens here, re-election just became an issue.

He’s forced to act.

Someone broke down their numbers, lots of unidentified respiratory illnesses lumped in with "flu".

Moreover, "flu" = several different strands. COVID-19 is a single strand.

Also you're comparing a well established virus with one that just got here. I'm sure at one point in time only 30 people were dead in China, now its thousands.

Essentially apples to oranges. COVID-19 isn't a huge deal, but its certainly worse than the flu. Just look at Trump's response.

I’d like to reiterate my plea for a stickied thread for all the flu death comparison people to circlejerk their idiocy.

It works for the Q-tards.

Nothing you linked makes the point you think it does. Wish casting, hypothetical articles from swine flu are irrelevant. The Italians are proof that if this situation is mishandled, it’s going to cause problems in local health systems.

Hypothetical articles?

You said it never happened before

Nothing hypothetical about it. It has. Recently.

Negative!
"Someone" was mistaken.

Perhaps they were referring to stats establishing up to 52K US deaths attributable to flu or related causes.

Are you under the impression H1N1 did not do that?

I'm under the impression that the consensus is that the hospitalization rate for WuFlu is a good bit higher than for swine flu. Happy to be shown info to the contrary.

One of the articles you quoted has “may” in the title. Another was simply the WHO using a word, and a third uses “if” instead of “May” and never materialized at all.

True. The overall numbers are likely to not be comparable though. The 2009 US H1N1 hospitalization rate ran around 260,000.

H1N1 killed healthy children and adults.

Kung Flu kills elderly with health problems

Which one sounds like a more devastating virus?

Today’s events are overblown and purely political

Good luck with that.

You must panic goddamnit, you must blame Trump, and you cannot utter one word about China.

Yes, if the United States suddenly implements socialized medicine and drastically cut their ICU beds and respirators while also closing any LTACs we could end up just like Italy

that was the rate or that was the absolute number at the end?

To me, the most astonishing thing about swine was how it was widely agreed that the death rate was 1-1.3% until 6 years later when they did the deep dive and found that it was .02%. That is to say, even the "calmed down" consensus have over-estimated it by 50X+!
