Generally, serial killers are true predators. As a predator, they seek out and victimize the weak. Athletic males in their early 20s don’t fit this mold per se. Extremely intoxicated —maybe, but not likely. I would think that the bodies had evidence of a “take down” wound or if no take down, then defensive wounds. Pure drowning should look totally different than violence then thrown into a body of water.

There's a simple, but unfortunate explanation for a lot of these cases and that's accidental drowning.

It happens especially to young men because they are drunk and probably wander into the darkness looking for a place to pee without realizing there's a body of water there. Women generally don't do that.

The city of Lacrosse WI actually formed a river watch program because so many drunk students had wandered into the Miss River and drowned.

I watched that TV series on it and so much of was them reaching for conclusions.

I know it's probably hard for the families to come to terms with such senseless deaths but the obvious really seems to fit.

Some of the deaths weren’t consistent with accidents. Ligature marks, date rape drugs, decomposition inconsistent with what you’d expect from weeks in the water.

The smiley face being a tag is extremely dubious, imo. You can find a smiley face painted on any bridge along the water. And in most of these 45 cases, LE has no idea where/how exactly the victim fell into the water.

Most logical explanation is you have drunk college aged kids that can’t resist peeing into the water and fall in

Eh.. I like reading about serial killers and read up on this theory in the past and it just never seemed to have enough connections from case to case.

Its more likely some of these may be unrelated murders... some of them just drownings.

Now if you want to study a unsolved serial murder case look at the long island serial killer(s).

That geographic area is some bull shite for a serial murderer.

Having spent some time in the region it's not that big of a stretch, especially if the perp or perps work in a traveling profession, like construction. Most of those dots are within an hour or two of the next closest dot.

True. It’s not that crazy a span of distance. A regional truck driver or someone who travels could easily be in these regions.

Another person pointed out that SKs are normally predators. This is true. They pointed out that college-aged males aren’t easy targets, which would typically be true hence the date-rape drugs. Many of these guys have also lived in these regions their entire lives, hard to believe a 20-something year old guy who lived in that part of the country his entire life would just randomly wander into a semi-frozen body of water. They’ve been around these things their entire lives, they know the deal with frozen lakes in the area.

While true the targets of serial killers depends on the serial killer's psychological make up. Targets are not always selected because they are easy prey.

A SK theory fits. John Wayne Gacy preyed on young men in their late teens and early 20s and he got away with it for years.

I know the detective(s) that came up with the Smiley Face theory have said they believed most, if not all, were drugged. Is there a way to reliably test for GHB in bodies that have been submerged in water for several weeks? Might be wrong, but I don’t think toxicologists typically test for GHB because it has such a short half life

In the 1970s, for 6 years. And many of his victims were male prostitutes
