Gutters: DIY or Nah?

We closed on our first home in late October. We’ve discovered that the lack of gutters leads to some water retention in areas of our yard that also don’t drain quickly. We are considering rain barrels to address the water retention (and water the plants). But, we learned that we need gutters to feed the rain barrels. So, we’ve decided we probably need to install gutters.
We’re on a budget (read: poor!). My partner is a mechanic and knows his way around a toolbox. We are slowly gaining confidence around our shared ability to do home maintenance (caulking, AC vent clean out, etc.) but we haven’t done any major projects.
H&G board, my questions for you are these:
• what’s the feasibility of DIY gutters? Is gutter installation something that folks of average intelligence and skill can do? Our philosophy so far has been to balance the cost of a potential screw up against the cost savings and sense of ownership that DIY gives. Can we do serious and costly damage if we mess up the gutters?
• what’s the cost of pro installation? DIY will still require us to purchase a not insignificant amount of materials. We’ll even need a ladder. If it’s only going to save us a marginal amount to DIY, I might lean more toward professional. For context: home is on the Westbank of Jefferson Parish. I would appreciate any referrals for professional installation services as well.

What is the design of the home? What I mean is, how much of the eves need gutters and are those areas that need gutters straight runs or cut up with lots of 90 degree angles?

That one is better left to the pros. You'll get seamless gutters that are sloped and sized properly with appropriately sized downspouts.
Not that that stuff is rocket science, but still...

Agree. Seemless gutters aren’t too expensive and worth it.

The problem with DIY guttering is you don't have the access to the forming machines that form the gutters on site to the proper lengths. You head to Home Depot or Lowes and you can get aluminum gutters, but only in 10 ft. lengths and that means a lot of seams that need to be sealed properly.
Like already mentioned, the gutters will need to be sloped toward the downspouts to work properly. Every seam and connection will need to be sealed so no leaks can occur.
It's not something a DIY person can't do, but one that is best left to the pros for a much cleaner and proper installation.

Agreed...don't DIY. Call Jose at 225 Gutters if you're in the BR area. That's who I used and they were great.

Gutters are cheap as shite and move water away from your foundation. Every house in La should have gutters

All of them. All straight runs. Three sides. The fourth side has a bigass raised metal carport thing.

‘Scuse me, mind if I borrow $3,500? My house needs gutters.

It won't be $3500 for sure. Let a pro do it. It's not high tech so people can do it, but they have the tools to do it correctly.
At one point, we got quotes for the high tech gutter shields, which were crazy high like $8k. Total replacement would have been much less.

I did the back side of my house which is basically a straight line. About as easy as you can get.
I suggest getting someone else to do it.
Mine came out fine, but it's not an easy DIY job... at all!

It shouldnt be 3500 unless you have a really big house.
Shoot for around 10 dollars a foot.

i had old gutters replaced and new seamless white gutters, leaf guards, and my fascia board fixed last week for $2300. 160’ in gutters and 80’ in downspouts. spectra gutter system.

Check Angie’s list. I found a deal for 100 ft of 6” seamless with downspouts for $300 last year.

If it cost $3500 to do your gutters and you’re poor, you bought WAY too much house. My house is just under 5000 square feet living and with pop ups and 6” gutters it was $2500. $2500 to move water away from my foundation for the next 50 years = cheap as shite.

I had mine done last April. It came with a lifetime warranty on material and labor and came in just under $8 per foot.
$2500 may seem like a big expense, but waaaaaaaaaaay worth it in the long run. Before my gutters were put up, there was no way I could have landscaping. Not to mention the trench that was forming all the way around my house from the water coming directly off the roof. And that was only 8 months after construction.

If you want to save money, get a quote with screens and without screens. If it’s cheaper to put your own screens, that’s not difficult. However, I watched the small crew fabricate and install my gutters and I couldn’t have done anywhere near as good a job as quickly and cost effectively. I’m a do it myself guy for most things but this was best left to the pros

Same here, and when I installed gutters on my first house back in the mid 70's, it was an old shotgun house with half round gutters made out of galvanized steel. They were 10 ft. lengths and had to be soldered at every seam. Luckily, I only had to do the long sides of the house since the roof was just a simple pitched one with no gable ends.
If my gutters need to be replaced on my current house, I'm hiring a crew to do it since they go completely around the house and the eaves are almost 20 ft. off the ground on my old 2 story house with 5 outside and 1 inside corners and 5 downspouts that drain into underground drainage pipe that carries it out to the street.
Seamless gutters are so much cleaner looking and offer fewer places for any leaks to form over time and the DIY guy can't do it like the pros.

I had Audubon do 6” half rounds with 4” round downspouts last summer. It was under $6.50/ft and they were great to deal with.
