How do you guys feel about the GM 6.0 Vortec motor found in the 2500HD

considering getting one. don't really need a 2500, but i feel as if they have a longer life than a 1500. i don't even plan on pulling anything other than a 14 foot utility trailer.

My work truck is a 6.0 2500HD. I like it, but I’d drive one more than just around the block prior to buying. I love the 3/4 ton but mileage is bad and it’s a bit sluggish. It pulls and stops my bay boat well.

Great engine. I would find a 1500 with one in it for what you need. Think most All Terrain models had em.

bulletproof engines coupled with bulletproof (4L80) transmissions

Not many changes through the years. Compare that to Ford engines. The 6.0 has proven itself throughout the yrs that it can be a workhorse. I tow an 11,000 lbs 5th wheel with mine. It gets the job done.

If I remember correctly it holds the record and by a wide margin for the run until failure test for a gas motor.
Wont blow your socks off with power but will last forever. Great motor.

They're incredibly reliable and cheap to repair if it ever does break. Not the most power and the fuel mileage isnt great but they will go forever.
I had one that went 285k hard miles before the transmission quit. Put a new trans in it and it's still dragging heavy shite around. As far as I know the engine still hasnt needed any work.

Am I remembering correctly about the run test? IIRC I heard that from you.

I think it was the 8.1 marine engine that did that. I'll have to dig it up.

My ‘17 2500 has the 6.0. Stepped the tire size up to 34.5’s and it’s not the most fuel efficient but not far off from my 2010 1500 with the 5.3 and 35’s, maybe 2mpg less. My dad had a 2001 2500 with a 6.0 that he traded in at the same time and bought a new ‘17 with the 6.0. He had zero issues with the motor/trans in that 16 yr time frame.

Do they still use those transmissions? Also, how do they compare to the 4L60E transmissions?

the 4L80 is a lot heavier duty than the 4l60e,probably one of the better modern transmissions gm has had. they are both 4 speed computer controlled. the 6.0 has been a really good engine. not real fuel efficient but very reliable.

i keep inquiring about this one in phenix city, al. they only posted the 1 picture on facebook. i read that some of these trucks had frame cracking. i wonder what causes that.

I had an '01 extended cab 4x4 with the 6.0. It was a freaking beast. I never had a lick of trouble with it and it always had a trailer with a skid steer, or a big tool trailer behind it. Sold it with 225k on it.
I'll also add that a buddy's father-in-law had an Escalade with the 6.0 (Not sure on the year) He sold it with 340k and had no issues with it either other than normal maintenance.

i think i'm gonna get one. i just realized that the pic i posted may be a 2WD truck. that's unfortunate.

Same modular V8 achitecture since 1996, not sure you really know what you are talking about.
Vortec 6000 is solid but there are common occuring problems with valvetrain noise and piston slap/oil control that can really show up in older engines. The gasket on the water pumps on all LS truck engines is suspect and are an age more than mileage issue. They are also not priority main bearing oiling, that means if the engine shows any sign of irregular oil changes or had an issue with low oil pressure then run, don't walk, away. Throttle body position sensors (TPS) are a common fault, I've replaced several on 4.8, 5.3, and 6.0 trucks. Same with coil packs, older they get they tend to crack around the mounting lugs and start letting moisture get into them, intermittent cold start idle issues at first then eventually a dead cylinder.

Those ‘01 and ‘’02 HDs were good looking trucks. Then Chevy put the slant eyes on them

Put a 6.0 in my reg cab 2wd with 4l65e trans, long tubes and a tune.....got better fuel mileage than the 5.3 that came out of it and would run like a spotted ape
