Oscars Viewership Sinks to New Low With 23.6 Million Viewers

23.6 million viewers tuned in on Sunday night to see “Parasite” sweep to a surprise victory. That’s a 20%, 6 million viewer drop-off from last year. The Academy’s second hostless show in a row scored a 5.3 rating among adults 18-49 in the fast national ratings, a 31% dip from 2019.
For comparison, last year’s Oscars delivered a 7.7 rating in adults 18-49 and 29.6 million viewers. That viewership figure, while up 12% from 2018, represented the second smallest audience ever for an Academy Awards telecast at the time. 2018 delivered the previous smallest viewership tally with 26.5 million viewers.

I caught the opening and Supporting Actor before finding something better to do with my night. I only got to watch maybe 3 or 4 of the touted movies this year so I just didn’t care. Looking forward to finally watching Parasite, Ford vs Ferrari, and 1917

Well, duh. A South Korean film won the most awards in the night, there was no drama regarding the acting awards with Pitt, Dern, Zellweger, and Phoenix sweeping the previous four major acting awards leading up to the Oscars and the only films nominated for multiple Oscars that finished in the top 15 in the box office last year were Toy Story 4, Rise of Skywalker, and Joker. The ceremony was filled with a bunch of films that nobody watched or had an attachment to.

Marginally. The problem with the awards shows is that the people winning wear $5,000 dresses, $50,000 in jewelry, and fly around in private jets... and they proceed to tell all of us sheeple how terrible we are as a society for still using drinking straws and driving around in our Ford Super Duty.
(yes, I'm using a bit of hyperbole, but you get my point).
Want to get me to watch again? Make better movies and have actors stick to acting instead of being political.
That said, my wife and I watched Parasite last night. Fantastic film. Tremendously better than Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

I actually think the exact opposite. The Oscars are typically held in the last Sunday of February or the first Sunday of March and it was held on February 9 this year. I bet there were a lot of people who had no idea the Oscars were being aired so early this year. Changing the date was a really dumb, misplaced idea that probably played a significant role in the ratings being so bad this year.

Man. That's crazy. The 90th Academy Awards were the first time viewership ever slipped below 30 million. It ticked up slightly last year but the bottom really dropped out last night.

I would say the problem is no drama, but one of the highest rated telecasts was to watch Titanic win. But there is a lack of suspense due to the glut of pre-Oscar award shows. Parasite pulled a cool upset, but most of the awards were pretty well-known in advance. Not much you can do to get awards show to vary things up a bit in the advance. Maybe start bribing the Globes.
But this was an outstanding year for movies. Hell, I liked all 8 of the 9 nominees I saw and I could make a strong ballot of the top 5 films that didn't get nominated.
Your biggest audience is women. It's reductive, but it's the Female Super Bowl. And what were you offering your core audience? You passed over Little Women and didn't nominate The Farewell. The Best Actress race was poor this year. Do more to attract your core audience.

See 1917 in theaters. I'd say the same about Ford v Ferrari because of the racing scenes, but it may be too late.
Haven't seen Parasite, but I would have really regretted if I'd seen 1917 on the small screen.

The biggest audience isn't just women, it's older white women. I'm guessing having featured performers like Janelle Monae and Billie Eilish and Eminem and that random rap guy isn't exactly the cup of tea for older white women.

Worst year for popcorn movies I can ever remember - Disney live action remakes and an Avengers movie I couldn't give 2 shits about. The list of fun, interesting, non-awards fare for adults that broke $100M domestic is basically non-existent. I expect to watch Us and OUATIH at some point, but that's about it.
I know most people will probably disagree, but I haven't enjoyed a QT movie since Inglorious Basterds or a Scorsese movie since Hugo.
2021 is shaping up to be much stronger.

I can 100% honestly say I had no idea it was even coming on until late Sunday afternoon when I saw some article about it.
Award shows do not register as pop culture events anymore. They are a relic from a different media age.
