The company I work for used a lot of McKinsey and BCG in the past. A few were really good and usually got a nice position afterwards. I think an internal consulting group would have been just as good though because most of the time they poached pieces of work that were already done then passed it off as their own.

I’m not hating on them. They got into Harvard and that’s the prize at the end.

I mean, if your criteria for deeming a company a “bunch of scumbags” is finding half a dozen people who worked there who you are not aligned with politically, just go ahead and say you hate every company that employs more than 100 people.

Skilling is clearly a scumbag. Jindal was in over his head as a governor and focused on running for president based on no qualifications besides being a minority Republican. Naive, yes. Scumbag, no?

And Buttigieg? What has he done that is remotely scummy? Of the mainstream candidates in the race, he and Yang are the two that show the least contempt for people, by far.

I've worked with them a few times over a period of about 3 years. The thing they did for us was to take what we already determined to be good ideas and convince upper management that we needed to do it ASAP. Too bad the company wouldn't just listen to their own employees and had to pay a consultant 7 figures for something that they had already paid for.

and I will add my anecdotal evidence - the one time I worked with them they offered recommendations to do shite that we had already figured out wouldn't work, but the big boss who didn't know that forced them upon us. They went away, don't know what became of their report, we were successful. I am sure they got a few hundred thou for their efforts.

I mean why listen to the schmucks that have worked in some business for decades. Hire a bunch of trendy suits to do dirty work all whilst telling everyone how awesome and smaaaaaat they are.

Most of the posts in this thread have nothing to do with the efficacy of consultants and simply reek of jealousy.

Your internal audience clearly doesn’t have the clout to influence as needed...even if they have the right ideas.

Consulting firms offer smart people on demand that work much longer hours than the typical employee. They play up experience across the industry but I generally find that part overrated. They cost an absurd amount which is a big reason they get the mindshare of executives.

McKinsey isn’t the problem. You come out of there how you went in.

Worked with McKinsey on various projects over a 20 year period and have yet to find that they design or fix anything effectively.

Consultants brought in to help "right-size" a troubled company generally recommend cutting significant layers of middle managers and consolidating divisions. Doesn't make them scumbags sometimes a company needs an outside perspective.

They're valuable with planning to integrate large acquisitions, or a bunch of small ones, not so much in determining new markets or growth strategies.

McKinsey, KPMG, Deloitte and others can play a role in helping a company really understand their business, however ugly that might turn out.

They are god awful expensive, which I think makes some put more importance on their advice than it deserves.

CEO's that really know their business don't need outside consultants to tell them what's next.

My opinion on consultants is mixed, mainly because the majority of them have never run a successful business and have no skin in the game.

I've met with Lunhow, talked with him for a few hours, our kids played with each other. He's definitely not a scumbag. Very thoughtful and considerate. It's a shame his name was drug through the mud for what ultimately the players did, not the front office.

ETA: IMO McKinsey is bilking scheme.

Not to be outdone, McKinsey’s pricing is much much higher, with one McKinsey “business analyst” - someone with an undergraduate degree and no experience - lent to the government priced out at $56,707/week, or $2,948,764/year.
