The Phantom Menace isn’t a terrible movie

I’m not afraid to say it.
It gets hated on because people have to compare it to Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi.. 4 and 5 especially. Also the awful awful Attack of the Clones (which is awful) comes next and drags it down more.
It’s not a fantastic movie but it gets too much hate.
It also helps that TLJ was a total joke. Phantom Menace at least feels like Star Wars.

Nah man, it is a terrible movie.
I can watch it and at least enjoy parts of it unlike TLJ. But it's still terrible.

The terrible parts are all centered around Darth Jar Jar.

The only thing keeping it from being the worst Star Wars movie is Attack of the Clones.

It is a coherent movie with a bunch of really dumb characters, equally dumb plot points, and a few universe-unraveling nonsensical ideas.
Contrast that with the truly terrible AOTC that is an incoherent mess with the same dumb characters, dumb plot points, and nonsensical ideas.
You could fix TPM with a few strokes of the pen - open the movie with the assassination plot from AOTC and center the action on Qui-gon and Obi-wan protecting Amidala, introduce Anakin at roughly Luke's age, run Maul as the Big Bad of the movie. No Trade Federation, no Gungans, no droid army. Kill Qui-gon at the end, set up a reveal of Sideous betraying Maul and turning Anakin to close Movie 2, end the trilogy with an extended hunt of the remaining Jedi/confrontation with Maul and ultimately the closer of Rogue One.

They could have cut 40 minutes of trade talk. Used Maul more.
And if jar jar had left when qui gon told him to the first time..would have been probably been better.

It has some really bad acting in it. Anikans mom, the trade guys, Anikan...all really bad. Natalie Portman was saddled by a bad script.

Having the gungans speak like an over the top caricature of Jamaicans really drags the movie down. Just making Jar Jar a little more serious would have gone a long way towards making the movie better.

Yes yes yes. The acting in these is horrible. I'm watching through all of them with my 4 year old and I'd forgotten how bad the acting is in the first 2. We started TFA tonight.
Neeson and McGregor are good, but the rest are like they videoed the table read.

There's no protagonist.
The dialog is terrible.
The acting is wooden and lifeless.
The kid and JarJar are awful and ruin every scene they are in.
Many of the major plot points are nonsensical.

It’s interesting to see how TLJ has affected the way a lot of folk view all the movies. The prequels are suddenly deemed better and TFA is suddenly shite.

Every actor in the prequels comes off bad, even actors who we know are good. Clearly it wasn’t the actors that were bad but instead the shite dialogue, absurd costumes, and I think the filming method due to the CGI. Which of course made all the prequels look fake.

That kid was one of the worst child actors I’ve ever seen. He was awful.

When it came out and after the first viewing it really sucked when the realization hit me that this movie and likely the next two as well would suck and be a big disappointment. TFA was way more enjoyable but then came TLJ etc etc. In hindsight, TPM is only the third worst Star Wars movie ever after Clones and TLJ. But don’t kid yourself that it is a really good movie. It isn’t.
