Did I catch it on an especially good day, or is it routinely delicious? Tamarind shrimp tacos, a hunk of pork loin cooked carnitas style...everything was much better than I expected it to be. Even the complimentary chile popcorn was fresh and tasty.

They also have a really good breakfast and excellent margaritas.

It's excellent, but the atmosphere is so bare I can't get my wife to go back. ??

Seriously? It’s bright, cheerful, and basic. Not luxury, but is a posh atmosphere required when the food is so tasty? I operate on the opposite principle: who cares what the place looks like if the food is delicious and carefully made.

I think their brunch is miles ahead of the dinner menu.

The queso is also legit (not Tex-Mex) but the service is usually slow. It's like they intentionally understaff.

I’m going to have to try this place again, I went once and thought it was very meh. I think it was close to when they opened though so willing to chalk it up to that.

El Pavo Real is one of the best Mexican spots in the city. Go for breakfast and try the chilaquiles and add carnitas or brisket (if they have it on special)

Amazing house made corn tortillas, fantastic margaritas ...and that popcorn!!!
