Longer distances, longer courses, playing from longer tees and longer times to play are taking golf in the wrong direction and are not necessary to make golf challenging, enjoyable or sustainable in the future.
So hitting it longer makes golf LESS enjoyable??

I think a PGA Tour ball is the way to go. Everyone gets issued standard ball that reduces average drives to 275 and big hitters to 290.
They can't give a ball that knocks 20% of their distance off.
Maybe 10%, but you can't make guys going from 375 to 290.
Also, like I said previously, they should just do this for the majors and leave it as optional for other tournaments. That might prevent the sponsors from an all out riot.

They're saying that courses are being made longer and longer and that is less enjoyable for the average player.
I'm a pretty long hitter off the tee and I agree. My playing/gambling partner in my 4some is pretty short off the tee and some of these almost 500 yard par 4's are not meant for guys that can't crank it 300 off the tee. And he's a 6/7 handicap.

This is gonna be across the board and there's also a political/environmental angle to this as well.R&A is really pushing this without compromise.

None of this stuff will ever happen. There is a reason that drivers are the most expensive club in the bag. It’s what sells. People don’t want to watch Brian gay and David toms hitting it 260 tops but in the middle of the fairway every time. They think (incorrectly) I can do that shite.
Chicks dig the long ball bro

I mean who doesn’t want to camp at 13 at the Zurich just to see who tries to cut the corner and put it on or near the green? I do.
One of my fav memories of that tourney was watching JD smoke a cigarette leaning on his driver. Then flick it, take a practice swing and do just that. Edge of the green.

So the USGA wants to change the rules of golf for everybody, because the longest 20 elite players hit it too far? And of those, only 35% won last year?
Stay in your lane, USGA. If the PGA Tour has a problem with it, let them fix it.

I have a hard time advocating to limit players who hit it long and straight.
I do believe adding more penalty areas further down the course and making rough more of a penalty would make you think about nuking driver down there.
Golf has never really been a "fair" game anyway.

Driver and ball tech has a lot to do with it.
Guys like Tony Finau are also just big athletic dudes, of course they are going to bomb it.

If they restrict the balls the long knockers will still be the long knockers.

Driver tech is a big deal too. Sweet spots are much larger and forgiveness for off center shots is much greater in newer clubs.

Nicklaus has been pushing this for a while, but like the poster in here said, the equipment companies gonna be mad

but the courses will survive.

Correct, it is not the equipment or we would all be hitting it 500 yards with their promise of 5 extra yards per driver series.
It is the ball. Just go back to wound balls that spin like a mother f'er. They not only spin high but spin left and right. It would put hitting fairways at a premium.

Yes and great holes and courses won’t have to be destroyed.
