Has anyone taken College courses while being an operator?

I have been away for three years now, but I am planning a return to Louisiana where I will be looking to get back into millwright work or, if I am fortunate enough, an opportunity in operations. Priority number one is establishing myself with the best job I can find to support my wife and newborn. However, I am interested in getting a degree in Mechanical Engineering.Apart from the obvious dedication it would take to go to school while also working with a wife and child, would an engineering degree at all be possible while on shiftwork? Have any of you done it?

Seems like it would be very hard with the OT that operations work, and the rotating shifts. Millwrights at my plant work straight days aside from the random call out.

No, most of us had to get a degree before becoming SEALs

Check with employer maybe.
I know a guy who work as a chemical plant electrician.
Took classes and got chemistry degree while working.
So it has been done.

I worked full time as a pipe fitter while going. Last two years I moved in to project management, thank God as there was no way to finish the degree only taking night classes. So it will be really hard.
But good news is many schools are offering online classes, so it is possible but it will prolly be expensive for online options as most are out of state.

This was my exact plan. Dropped out before my junior year at LSU for a job in production at a chemical plant. Never even though twice about finishing my degree once I saw that first yearly pay.

Yes, online education is a thing now. I've known several to complete a degree while working shift work.

Do it online. I know several operators etc that became engineers.

Make sure there's wifi for your online classes at Braydyn's tournaments and you should be gtg.

It is possible, but you won't do it while working in 4 years, at least at LSU.
The ME dept at LSU is notorious for weeding out as many people as they feel need be.
Statics and Thermo were the big classes to get past in 2000s anyway.
I still remember the first thermo test's average score was in the 30's

As a millwrong on days, probably. As an operator, that’ll be difficult.
I’d bet it would be a matter of how long you’d want to go to school bc some classes are offered at certain times only once per semester or one semester per year.
