A buddy of mine made an assertion that most of the art galleries in downtown Nola are there primarily to launder money. He had no evidence other than what would seem to be a common sense argument. That argument is “who would pay that much money for so much crappy art?”

I agree that Nola is a cultural influencer in the south but what are your thoughts on this?

I know two different wealthy people who drove to NOLA to buy artwork for their house, recently. Seemed odd to me but whatever.

I'd rather buy the artwork in Jackson Square

My stepfather ran the Contemporary Art Center for a while.

Big fundraising events were held 5 times a year. Plus a ton of catering events were held there.
I'm talking some very rich families holding sweet 16 parties and mitzvahs

So it made it's money.
Can't speak for the smaller art galleries

I'm sure there are a few with some shady stuff going on, but many of those places have some amazing stuff that can't be found in any other cities.

You have to remember, your average Joe isn't coming in from Bunkie to buy nice art and antiques. Plenty of rich people locally and from all over the world buy stuff from these places.
Hell I had a friend that I don't consider that rich who dropped $15K in one shop over a two month period.

I wanna know what those two Camera stores on Canal Street, directly across from each other, are about. Camera Stop I think.

I'll tell ya this.

Alot of those cutesy boutiques and shite along magazine street are bigtime money losers. They're in business so rich men can keep their wives occupied while they're fricking other women.

Nobody buys anything out of those frickin' places.

A couple of years ago, a Saudi Prince was in town for some oil field conventionl His assistant called one of the big gallerys on Royal St. to let them know he was coming and tell them how to handle him.
He walked through the shop, nodded or pointed to something, a clerk wrote down the item and it was done. Never looked at a price. Sent an invoice; paid in full in 24 hours and it was shipped. I know it was over 7 figures, but don't know exact total. To people like that, it's a trip to the Dollar Tree.

Art in general is mind-blowing to me in terms of pricing.

I can find something I think is great and it's a few hundred bucks, or find a pencil drawing that looks like it's from a 4th grader and it's worth $500K.

I admittedly just do not get it.

BREAKING: Rich people buy art.
ALSO BREAKING: You do not have the sensibilities of a rich person.
