Check out some ancient Assyrian carvings and then we can question who appropriated who.
On a more modern bent, cornrows at least look like they've seen soap and water recently. A whole lot of dreads are a rubberband away from being a rodent domicile. (And I know rodent domiciles from having replaced and cleaned out walls in our house in the French Quarter.)
