In all honesty though man, you asked kind of a dumb question. You should expect responses like this when you ask why linemen can't block downfiekd or release downfield to distract the defense or engage with linebackers or dbs in pass coverage. That's just dumb man. That's too much of an advantage for the offense to have. If you allowed that, teams wouldnscore damn near everytime they had the ball if they could pass at all. It's common sense man.

I’m not upset about the rule. I realized there was probably a good reason for the rule. I just didn’t know what it was. You people are ruthless.

Hey, why cant defenders knock the shite out of a wide reciever, knock their dicks in the dirt, and interfere with them past 5 yards downfield? You see? It's kind of self explanatory isnt it?

Why would you think it’s ok for lineman to run downfield and confuse defenders as to who they should defend? You realize o-linemen are ineligible to receive passes right? You might as well ask why Olinemen are not allowed to catch passes..it would be the same thing.

It’s a fairness rule. Defensive back have to defend eligible receivers. If you want to overload the defensive backs, you would send a few ineligible players out on pass routes to draw defenders. Going downfield on a pass play is an act that only eligible receivers can do.

It is probably just to simplify the job for the refs (which already have a difficult time with). There isn’t much of a reason for a lineman to be downfield other than something that would be illegal. Blocking before a pass, catch a pass, etc. Thats the only logical explanation I have.

No, not at all.

The way he asked seemed like an honest question to understand the why behind the rule.

Common sense tells me if you release a couple of offensive linemen on the snap, you'll have 1-2 defensive dudes coming in untouched, so I'm interested to hear how a team would score every time with defensive players getting free runs at the QB.

You're the guy who called the OP upset, and you're melting the hardest in this thread.

Your overreaction here is pretty wild, man.

What a bunch of pompous dickheads! Someone asks a serious question about the reasoning behind a rule, and the best most of you can come up with is “because it is the rule”.

Good thing message boards were not around when Sir Isaac Newton wondered why an apple fell and hit him in the head. He would have been ridiculed with this response: “Because it just does”.

May had God blesses your children whenever they asked why the sky was blue or why does it rain....just because.

No, you didn’t answer why. I don’t know why are getting so pissy about this question. Yes we all know it’s a rule that’s been around forever. WHY was the rule first enacted? What scenario is the rule intended to prevent?
What was football like before the rule?

If you can’t answer this simple question then STFU. There’s no reason to get offended by it like a twat.
