Steelers owner Art Rooney II says changes will be made to Rooney Rule

Despite the existence of the "Rooney Rule," which requires league teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operation jobs, only one of the five recent head coaching vacancies was filled by a minority. The 2019 NFL racial and gender report card stated that NFL minority hiring is at its worst in the past 15 years, according to a recent story from ESPN's Kevin Siefert.
None of this sits well with Art Rooney II, the Steelers' president and chairman of the NFL's diversity workplace committee. Rooney, during an interview with NFL Network's Steve Wyche on Tuesday evening, stated that the committee will look into making changes to the Rooney Rule in an effort to fix the lack of recent minority hiring in the NFL.
Rooney was asked if NFL teams should be required to interview more than one minority coach for an open position.
"We'll look at a lot of different things," Rooney responded. "This time last year, we made some changes to the Rooney Rule and we required the interview to come from somebody outside the organization because we didn't it to be an internal situation where somebody down the hall was called down to the office for an interview. We changed that rule last year. Obviously we have to look at what we can do differently now, perhaps even expand the Rooney Rule into some of the lower levels, perhaps the coordinator level, just to make sure that the minority opportunities are there."

The Rooney Rule is stupid and a sham. Why does an organization have to interview someone they have no interest in interviewing?

Instead of the Rooney rule, they should make a rule for stopping shitty re-tread hires.
There are way too many out there.

We need more Asian cornerbacks.

they should implement a reverse rooney rule for players. have to try out at least 3 white guys at DB, RB, and WR

I would find it patronizing and insulting to be interviewed solely based on this rule

At the end of the day, it isn't a big deal to say someone has to interview someone.
It isn't like they're saying they have to hire them. AI think the Rooney Rule applied to lower level positions is actually smarter than head coach. You are usually a coordinator before becoming a head coach and there aren't many available minority candidates at coordinator positions.
I hate affirmative action, but I am ok with this for NFL optics. It isn't actually making them do anything besides have a conversation. Interviews are good practice for candidates too.
Always been a non-story to me.
Now, if they ever force teams to HIRE someone they don't want to hire, that would be some world class bullshite.

Yeah, I mean, this too. I wonder how many black candidates just tell teams to frick off because they know they're being Rooney Rule'd.

Instead of the Rooney rule, I think the NFL should develop an academy for Ex Players to get into coaching and front office jobs. Like full on academy, and instead of the Rooney rule, teams should be required to take on some ex players as GAs and interview them at the least for lower level coaching and executive jobs.
I personally think that would be more effective than saying "You have to interview a minority"

Man, that's a great idea. Even allow each team to have 3-4 "coaching interns" each season that help out like GAs.
Very cool idea.

The NFL needs to address why hispanics make up 20% of our nation but 0% of NFL players

Something I have been thinking about for awhile. Players could enter looking to get into coaching or Front Office roles. Get some study from former/current executives, coaches, players, media personalities.
Teams are obligated to take on guys in GA roles that make it through, in some small capacity. Obligated to give interviews for various roles.

You write a one pager with the idea and get it to someone. I'm serious. Great idaa.
They're always looking for ways to help former players. The Players Union or whatever would absolutely lobby for something like that in the next CBA.

so 20%. doesnt that fall in line with the national average or even better. i mean they are literally called minorities because there are less of them around, it makes sense that less would be hired.

Why force a business to interview a person that they will never hire? If a minority was the best option they would be hired. Just like if Colin Kaepernick was a Hall of famer, he would be the starting Quarterback for someone.
