Can we get a period James Bond set in the 60s when it was still okay to shoot people and bang hot chicks then leave in the morning?
You know that we can't.

To the guy who asked name a ww2 movie that came out before 3 years ago I’d like to ask what he would consider saving private Ryan?

I honestly can't remember a time when there weren't several period pieces that were popular each year

I mean, Mad Men won all kinds of awards. Why can we have that style?
Bond movies were more fun fighting SMERSH and SPECTRE

Seven of the last ten Best Picture winners were period pieces. Plus Moonlight was split between the past and present.

Popularity of Downton Abbey leading to movies like The Favorite

Hell, half, at least, of all Seinfeld episode premises aren’t possible with cell phones.
the (now inactive, I think) modernseinfeld twitter account is pure gold with episode synopses of episodes that are set in current times.
for instance:
When George falls for a Twitter bot, Kramer claims he once Catfished himself. J:How’s that even possible? K:Oh I’m good Jerry. I’m real good

A Knight's Tale (2001) did a really good job of flipping the bird in a period piece!
I've always been a big fan of them.

I guess with cgi they are easier to make.
OUATIH used almost no CGI

I'm surprised with the hit of Downton Abbey, we haven't got a plethora of Victorian movies.

They've been around for a while now.
Master and Commander is one of my favorites that immediately comes to my mind and it's from 15+ years ago.

period piece is generally something 10 years or older .... careful attention must be paid to electronics, signage etc.
I just finished a film set in 1968 Chicago and it's difficult ... thermostats, crosswalk flashing signs, ADA sidewalks, security cameras, doors and windows, hardware
not to mention the vehicles. All has to be accurate or the internet and colleagues will notice.

That's what makes movies like Chinatown so great. The cars, wardrobes, the buildings, down to what was sitting on a desk, or on a dresser, looked perfect. Pretty sure Nicholson's wardrobe affected fashions some too. It was on point, and looked sharp.
The office scenes, and the scene where the Army took the telegram to the mother in Saving Private Ryan were what my mom loved about that movie. She was at her grandmother's when someone brought the telegram about one of my great uncles being killed in The Philippines. She told me nearly every house on her street had a banner with a star or two on them.
The kitchen sink she was at when she saw the car coming up the road reminded me of my dad's mother's house. I bet they had big window fans in the bedrooms like my grandmother did before she got AC too.
