For the first time ever, the festival will be extended to five days from July 1 to July 5, organizers announced via Twitter.

Mayor Latoya Cantrell says extending the partnership is great news not only for New Orleans, but the state of Louisiana.

“But locking it in for another 5 years is significant for New Orleans, Louisiana with the economic impact. For 25 years the festival has been here, it’s turned a dormant summer season into a vibrant time of year and it’s exciting,” Cantrell told FOX 8 News.

How many businesses will undergo repairs? Or take time away for family vacations?

When Walk-On's announced it would close from June 29 to July 6 due to repairs, it set off a social media firestorm. People posted dozens of comments on the restaurant's Facebook page. Rob Lawrence said, "Call it what it is. Racist actions by a racist establishment. Point blank period. Closed for Fourth of July Weekend. Inexcusable."

"I find it quite odd that your restaurant would shut down during a peak weekend in the city. The only difference with this weekend and other big weekends is that the majority of the city visitors will be African American," Malik Bartholomew said.

From what I read on here walk-ons did not want to compete with the in-hotel-room BBQ scene...

I seriously doubt anyone from Africa is flying in for the festival.

Now that's a power move from Walk-Ons. Just flat passed on the money to not deal with the crowd.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a few from Ghana this year. Since Essence put on the trip and it is a home/home type tribute they are doing.

I have no problem with Essence fest being in New Orleans. It’s a totally different crowd than the Bayou Classic.

That's really nice of Walk-Ons to give their employees the time off to attend the festival.

You people are clueless. The Essence crowd is not even close to the Bayou Classic crowd. I’ve went downtown during the fest and it was all good

I used to work Essence. It was a good experience. The types that go to this, for the most part, have achieved some level of success.

I love when they show quotes from the idiots about Walk-Ons. They had a busted pipe under the floor that caused significant damage and was a costly repair.
