Yes, background noise is a huge factor that people ofttimes don't consider. Things such as cars passing by, pets, etc. If you get a mic stand you can get an acoustic screen to help with low level background noise. Another option is to put up a blanket over a window that faces a street essentially creating a 2nd wall.

Start with a Rode Podcaster Pro. You're on your own for content, but at least you'll have a bangin' console.
