Looking for a new rifle for deer and hogs. Won’t be shooting past 350-400 very often. Have a few rifles in popular calibers such as 270 and 308, so I just want something that not everyone has and is a little different but still an extremely effective round. What’s the OB’s experiences with this round?

I’ve been looking for the a similar gun to add to the safe. The 6.5x284 has caught my attention. Ammo isn’t cheap or easy to find but manageable. I’m shopping lol

I have a custom made rifle in .280 AI, absolutely love this cartridge. Shoots flat and has plenty of down range power. Basically the same ballistics as a 7 mag without the blast and recoil. I shoot Nosler custom 140 Accubonds and they are about as perfect a deer bullet for that velocity as you can get. You can also shoot .280 rem in it as well...

6.5x55 is what you really want.

It is the original 6.5 and still the greatest. Its different, but no so different to have limited ammo options. It's extremely popular overseas.

One of my favorite cartridges. 7mag performance with significantly less recoil, and you can fireform your own brass by shooting 280Rem through it.

Every whitetail I’ve shot with the 280AI has dropped dead. Not one step taken.

I have one I've used for Antelope hunting and it's a really good caliber. I took 3-4 vertebra out of one's neck at 315 yards this year.

I'm shooting Nosler Accubonds LR at 3020fps from a 26" PacNor super match grade barrel with 1:9 twist. I might should have gone with a 1:9.5 or 1:10 but I did want the option of going to a heavier bullet.

Ammo I'm using and will soon be reloading

I have a 6.5 creedmoor I built that I reload. I have one load with 43+ grains of Reloder 16 that I’m pushing a 143gr bullet at 2900+.

Not saying the OP should buy one. I’m just saying that I’d bet that 280AI could get pretty fast with good brass and the right powder.

No argument from me on that one. I'm thinking with the 26" barrel on mine I could push the 150 pill about 3100-50 or so.

I shot several loads (Hornady & Nosler) and the Nosler was more consistent with speed and accuracy. I did find the Hornady 162 ELDX has some potential and I will work up a load for it. The factory Hornady was all over the place across the chronograph, varied as much as 240 fps.

Thanks OB, now it’s just time to figure out what I really want. I really like the Bergara B-14 ridge rifles, but they don’t make one in 280 AI.. however they make a 280 AI barrel that they sell. Wonder how hard it would be to convince them to put that barrel on one of their rifles

Another forum was discussing this round vs. 30-06 yesterday. General consensus seemed to be advantage 06 at hunting distances unless you are going for cool factor. My favorite quote from that thread:

quote:

Cartridges by age group:

20 to 30 - 6.5CM
30 to 45 - 280AI
45+ 30-06

Cartridges by hat:
Flatbrim - 6.5 CM
Julius/First Lite/Sitka/Killix - 280AI
Whatever was hanging by the door - 30-06

Cartridges by hairstyle:
Man bun - 6.5CM
Receding - 280AI
Combover or gone - 30-06

LOL, and I should be shooting the 06 by that chart.

Starkville,
For what you described (deer/hog rifle that's effective to 400 yards, yet not all that common), the 280 AI is one of many fine candidates. In addition to the 6.5x284 Winchester mentioned by someone, you could also add the 284 Winchester. I'v got an XP bolt action pistol in 284 Win and I really like it. Combined w/ it's 16" barrel and a muzzle brake, the muzzle blast is significant. If you don't yet handload, availability of factory ammo is something to consider. I'm not sure if Win still has factory loads for the 284, but I know availability their brass is sporadic, at best. OTOH, Norma and Peterson make 284 Win brass and Lapua makes 6.5X284 brass that would only need to have the neck expanded. As good as the 284 is, it's muzzle velocity will run a couple hundred fps behind the 280 AI. Any 280 Win rifle could be rechambered to the AI version for little cost by a competent gunsmith. Of course you could also consider any of the Weatherby cartridges.

I have a .280Rem. Never heard of a .280al. For me, the 280 has more recoil,
More noise and a longer action than my kids 7mm-08 with no noticeable upside. I’d get a 300wsm if I had to buy another.
