For a good solid rock album this century, give me Velvet Revolver Contraband.

Alice in chains. Jar of flies or dirt.
Lane Staley had the best rock and roll voice of the 90's and Alice in chains was the best of the grunge genre.

Brand New - The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me
The Black Keys - Rubber Factory
The National - Boxer
The Avett Brothers - I and Love and You (if that counts)
Death Cab for Cutie - Plans
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Cage the Elephant - Self Titled
Cold War Kids - Robbers and Cowards
I dont listen to it nearly as much, but at the time, that Brand New album was everything. Im sure im forgetting some of my other favorites.

That's funny, I remember them on Headbangers Ball before grunge was a thing. Cant see a grunge band putting out Jar of Flies either. Their riffs are definitely metal based.

Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Trixter, and Nelson were all on Headbanger's Ball too

Girlfriend and I did some research into this recently looking at things like album sales etc. and we came to the conclusion that Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park is the most universally loved and iconic record of the 2000s.
A lot of lists gave bullcrap Arcade Fire and Wilco type records that were big for a minute, but Hybrid Theory was a damn near perfect record at the perfect time much like Nevermind.
Musically, I think Lateralus is the best in terms of musicianship and song craft, but it’s not a complete record, there were definitely some duds and filler songs on there.
Toxicity was a complete record but had that weird Armenian thing going that precluded it from crossing over and attracting new “unlikely fans” like Hybrid Theory.
American Idiot is in the running, but as a big time Dookie fan, it felt like Green Day saw Good Charlotte and was like, “k, lets dress like that and sing about hating George Bush.” It was a cash grab/reboot record for them.
My favorite though? Contraband by Velvet Revolver. In fact, I think it is the purest rock n roll album of the past 20 years. If some alien from Xanthakkus came to Earth and said, “explain to me what rock music is.” Then I would hand them Contraband.

I agree w/ all of that, EXCEPT there is zero filler on Lateralus. Of course it can be said that Tool isn't traditional rock but Lateralus is a perfect album.

The idea that records like Arcade Fire’s Funeral and Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot were flash in the pans that didn’t have lasting impacts is definitely wrong.

Carnavas is much better, imo.

Hybrid theory was great. It crossed over in a major way.
Toxicity is my favorite though they are some strange songwriting guys. The instrumentation was great. Who doesn't love Chop Suey?
