I hunt alone on public land and consistently tag deer. Friday I killed a big 6 point about 200 lbs. I could not get it on my 4 wheeler. I had to drag it with the 4 wheeler. I struggled to get it in the bed of the truck. Besides a trailer is there anything else that can make it easy to get it in the truck

They make hoists that attach to your hitch for skinning/processing but could just as easily be used to get it into the bed. I’d use that or rope and determination

ETA: I’d buy this and call it a day

Do you not have a winch on atv or truck? Rope over limb lift with 4 wheeler and back truck under it, or at least back up to it. May have to tie head off in truck bed then pull in hindquarters

I’m sure you tried it but if you can, lift the deers upper body as high as you can onto the rear wheel well of the four wheeler. Hop onto the rack and pull him up the rest of the way, using the wheel well as a slide.

That’s my best Tip. I’ve loaded some brutes that way.

4 wheeler - get the head into the footrest area, stand on the back rack, pull him up using the fender as a slope. This should be done using legs in a deadlift motion.

Truck - use ratchet straps hooked to tie downs to hold the head as high as possible into the bed. Then heave the rear half in. A huge one may require a rear strap and a middle one as a handle, but unfortunately I've never had to try that.

Easy to load a deer on wheeler. Run the wheeler up a tree to put the rack on the ground. Slide deer up to the rack, roll him into the rack, bungee cord him to the rack, back the wheeler off the tree, and then ride him out.

I have loaded 240# deer this way without any problems. If you don't want to ride it up a tree use the wheeler winch to put the rack on the ground.

Get the winch/hoist rig that fits in a receiver hitch. Weld receiver hitch on 4 wheeler and use it on truck and 4 wheeler. That's what I do. It is at camp now or I would take a picture.

Put the head on the tailgate, climb in the bed , and drag.

I have never seen a deer I could not load in this manner.

Get a cargo carrier that fits into your trailer hitch. It will only be a couple feet of the ground. We keep one at the camp just for when someone is hunting alone.

Thanks for all of the tips. One thing about that buck someone out there must be feeding the deer. I have never seen so much fat on a deer. It literally had 1/2” of fat across the back and sides. I have tagged a lot of bucks over there and never had that much fat. Of course bucks travel a lot maybe it came from a lease. Im about 2 miles from a lease.

You can take an ATV onto state ground in Louisiana? That's awesome.

For truck, I read this tip on a facebook group, have yet to give it the field trial:

Get a piece of plywood that fits in your bed. Lean the plywood on the tailgate so it acts as a ramp. pull the deer as far onto the plywood as possible. Do a deadlift type motion picking up the end of the plywood and slide into truck.

Also, this guy has a pretty good method using plywood and a pulley.

I've used two ropes. Long one tied to the 4 wheeler over a branch to the deer. Second, shorter, to tie of when I get it to the height I want, untie the 4 wheeler and back it under the animal, untie and drop. Use the short rope again to tie it down.

Everyone's situation is different. Hope you find a solution to yours.

Knife and a come-along. You’ll need a tree of course. I had to hoist a buck I killed 6 years ago with one and it happened to be in the truck bed at the time by pure luck.

I've not really thought about his problem until yesterday. The friend I hunt w/ has a side by side w/ a dump truck type bed w/ a block and tackle hooked to the back of the cab. I usually borrow the side by side to hoist the deer into the back or my buddy helps me. Unfortunately, his side by side is in the repair shop. Yesterday I killed a doe and he was sill on stand. She was small so I was able to get her into the cargo box of my truck by myself. Wouldn't a portable gambrel and hoist like this work? One could attach the top of the first pulley to the tie down in the inside of the cargo box, let the tail gait down, attach the gambrel to the back legs of the deer and hoist the deer into the cargo box.

Now that I've thought about it some, I've got another idea I'll try. I've got a 1" thick rubber mat serving as a bed liner in my cargo box. Next deer I kill, i'll let down the loading gate, pull the mat out far enough that I can put the deer on it, roll the deer up in the mat and shove mat and deer into the cargo box.

Sheet of plywood, prop it up on tailgate, slide deer up on it, pickup the plywood and slide it into bed of truck with deer on it.
