The Athletic Article on London

Chargers situation in LA has been on shaky ground for a bit.

League exploring options including London and STL.

quote:

LONDON — The NFL concluded its annual four-game London series on Sunday in front of a robust, energetic crowd of 83,000 at Wembley Stadium. In all, more than 286,000 fans packed Wembley and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as the league showcased its brand to European fans.

It marked the 17th straight year the NFL has played games in London. More than two million fans have bought tickets, while merchandise sales and television ratings continue to surge. There is a robust fanbase, a ready-made venue, the necessary political support and more than enough local corporate sponsorship entities to support a permanent team in capital city of England.

The only thing lacking is an NFL owner with the vision and boldness to see past and work around any logistical issues of playing overseas and make the leap of moving his or her franchise across the Atlantic.

That might be changing.

quote:

Finally, The Athletic has learned that NFL owners are concerned enough about the Chargers’ situation in L.A., where a crowded sports market and the presence of the more established Rams has resulted in a tepid embracement of the Chargers, that they would provide the necessary support for a relocation to London if the Chargers pursue it.

The NFL seems to be taking note. And the necessary support for a Chargers move there could be available among fellow owners.

“Some would be happy …” a high-ranking NFL official told The Athletic. “But all of them (are concerned) about them in L.A. So I think they would get (support).”

He also says the Chargers would switch divisions for the commute so we would get at least a minor reshuffling there too. Not opposed to that actually.

Writer says no path to stadium in SD, not an option at all.

I didn't watch that one, I will say the Raiders-Bears game at Tottenham Stadium was legit. Great crowd.

Europe would only work with like 4 teams and the league paying a 20% bonus to every player and coach for each game played there.

Teams visiting would do a 2-4 game “tour” through Europe and stay for the full time. 3-4 game home stands and road trips for the Europe teams. Only way the travel wouldn’t become a ridiculous disadvantage.

Would also have to reduce preseason games to 2 and add 2 extra byes and expand rosters

London
Manchester
Berlin
Dublin

Or something like that

New York to Los Angeles is 30 minutes less than New York to London.

A division of east coast teams presents no issue.

A real stretch to assume that UK fans would switch teams to legitimately support the chargers.

Viewership etc may be on the rise, but new fans aren’t going to 8 games a season to watch a potentially dog shite team. It will be the hardcore longer term fans who have spent decades only being able to watch SNF and MNF at 3am. Those fans - like myself - will not be switching teams.

Their hope would have to be for the games to keep being played around 2pm local time so everyone can get home and watch the afternoon kickoffs from the states.

It would take a good decade to get a proper fan base

And the Patriots still wouldn't have any competition in their division.

London would be much better than Los Angeles. Do they not like football in Toronto?

NY to London is only 3 hours longer than NY to Dallas, and they are in the same division.

3 hours is kinda significant though.

But I totally get your point.

It’s not like they would be flying coach.

Good luck signing free agents. Tax issues alone will kill their ability to compete. Add in family separation issues as well as the political climate in London and you can forget it.
