Who is the worst coach to win a CBK national title?

#1 for me is pretty obvious. Tubby Smith.
Tubby was 46-62 in the Big 10 at Minnesota and 18-36 in the Big 12 at Texas Tech. His NC was his only Final 4 appearance. Granted that nobody here seems to realize that. And of course his title was with Petino’s players.
#2 for me is Jim Valvano. No matter how much that suggestion will get me killed. He was 71-69 in the ACC at NCSU, and even in his NC year he lost 10 games. (There’s a reason they were such huge underdogs to Houston.)

A lot of his contemporaries thought Valvano was the best game coach in the business.

That year their best player missed half the season with an injury. He returned just before the ACC tournament.

they're all about the same. All overrated. It's all about having the best players.

Based on what I am seeing, Jim Harrick’s probably one of the worst coaches in the modern era (1985 to present) to win one.
Not a bad coach by any means but most of the list is made up of guys who are or will be in the HOF like Knight, K, Crum, Izzo, etc.
I basically narrowed the list down to him, Gary Williams of Maryland, Steve Fisher of Michigan, Nolan Richardson of Arkansas, Tubby Smth, and Harrick. Of those, Harrick seemed to have the least sustained success and a lesser win percentage.
Fisher won one title and reached two more finals with Michigan, albeit ones vacated due to the Fav Five.
Gary Williams has a ton of wins in the ACC, which is typically one of the best if not the best basketball conference.
Nolan Richardson had an insane winning percentage of about .700%, he just trailed off toward the end of his career as Arky continued on in the SEC.
Tubby hasn’t stayed too many places long but he wins everywhere and he has plenty of them.
Harrick’s history of questionable compliance issues called off by the end of his career at Georgia points it at him.

How do you make a case against Tubby Smith and not mention Saul?

I'll say Ollie since he's the Mike Dubose of CBB.

This is dumb
Do you know how hard it is to win a college basketball title? They’re all good coaches if they get to cut down the nets
