This isn't like your yard. They build the field over a layer of gravel with a drainage system under it. There was a $2M upgrade this past summer as well. LINK

The big drainage project didn’t happen last year. It will start this year after the TAM game. There is underground drainage now and with a sand based field the water moves quickly through the soil and roots.

It has never actually rained in Tiger Stadium so there is no need.

These links don't answer all the questions, but there is some interesting stuff regarding the field. Yes, these are old videos/articles so things may have changed a little...

It rains all the time in TS but the chance of rain is never.

There is a $2,000,000 drainage system under the field, it will drain quickly!

I'm sure it will drain quickly. But good drainage is a "back end" solution (i.e. after the water has already entered the surface). Covering the field would be a "front end" solution (i.e. not allowing the water to saturate the field in the first place). No water = nothing to drain. Given the choice would you rather wear quick drying clothes in the rain or simply just put on a raincoat to prevent your clothes from getting wet in the first place?

Again, I assume there is a reason they don't cover the field. But from a logical standpoint wouldn't make more sense to take efforts to prevent the field from getting wet vs. making sure it dries quickly AFTER getting wet? Something that though it may happen quickly, wouldn't happen instantaneously even with the best subsurface drainage

Bid for Tiger Stadium

Has the work been done yet or not? Looks like this bid was just let and approved September of this year?

You're making too much sense for these dimwits. But I agree with you 100%.

Fields today are built like putting greens. All water goes straight through to a subsurface drainage system. The grass could be wet but there won't be any standing water....especially since the drainage upgrade this past summer or might have been 2018 summer; don't remember.

They don't cover fields. Typically they soak the fields with blower irrigation systems before games anyway. We design fields with sand/moss/gravel/hydraway flat pipe drainage system's that need to be moist to keep playing surface safe and it helps keep field of play cool. Flat pipe dumps into a large French drain system that runs under the sidelines. If any water is held during a large storm event its held in the French drain pipe system that sits lower than field drainage. Under no circumstance is water held in flat pipe system....its a direct flow.

bullshite. Different grass and different root structures.
You act like after a 2" rain, 5 minutes later the dirt under the grass would be dry. It's not! The moisture under the grass leads to the roots giving way and slipping.

The field has a nice crown to it. Maybe the sidelines?
