They are tanking and packaging picks for next year. Don't know their QB contract situation. They may package him off, too.

It'll practically be a 3rd rounder. You know that.

yeah... but if we're trying to get a similar type WR... like AJ Green or Emmanuel Sanders... they're going to be looking for at least a 2nd rounder from us as well

the market is set

Well...that's what they can ask for. Doesn't mean they're gonna get it. If the Saints and 49ers tell the Bengals to frick off with their 2nd round pick, they'll come back begging them to take something worse. There's a reason why they're the Bengals.

Imagine going to sleep with your team being 1-6 and waking up and your team is 7-0

It's probably one those 8 compensatory picks they seem to get each year from the league.

Still don't know how that formula works, but Pats are Masters at it. Now they can trade them.

That kind of screws us if we are in pursuit of someone like Green.

Reported on ESPN yesterday that Cincy came out and said Green is not on the trade block.

Teams literally say this all the time and end up trading. Money talks.

Maybe he is, but that is beside the point. If the Saints gave up a 2nd for Sanu, many on here would be saying that we gave up a 2nd for a #3 WR on a losing team. That is what the Patriots did, but because it is the Patriots, people want to change the narrative to "Muh Patriots win again." They gave more than his value IMO, but it could pay off and they have a lot of draft picks, so it is less risky for them.

I like Sanu. I think he is very talented. I do think he will do well for the Patriots. I would have mixed feelings if the Saints made the same trade. All that aside, it does change that the Pats gave up a 2nd round pick for a team's #3 WR nor does it change the fact that the Patriots miss often on players that they acquire. It is the parroted mystique that they are infallible that gets annoying.

If there's one position where the Patriots whiff at, it's WR. They have spent a lot of draft capital on the position to come away with nothing to show for it.

- Harry
- Dobson
- Boyce
- Mitchell

What I like about the Patriots is they accumulate picks/players. Nobody bats 1.000, much less .500 in player evaluations. The more chances you have, the better the odds are you will get good players.

I'd rather hit 50% on 12 chances than on 7 chances. That's what the Patriots do. Having Brady helps, but their strategy also landed them Garapolo and Brisset who are both quality starters right now at worst.

Teams will use Green's injury history and his expiring contract to try and drive down the price. They either trade him for what teams are willing to give or risk losing him in free agency. Does he really want to spend how ever many good years he has left on a losing team trying to rebuild?

The Bengals, like the Redskins, are too stupid to do any kind of fire sale to get more picks. They’re one of the worst franchises for a reason. They won’t trade Green.

They might trade Eifert though. And honestly, that’s a more realistic target now because the 49ers can outbid us for Sanders

Steep, sure. But Sanders and Green are free agents after 2019. They will not get 2nds for either. Sanu is under contract through 2020.

I can understand that and statistically you are right, the more pieces you have the better chances you have for success. However I do think it needs to be taken into account what makes the Patriots situation different that they can afford to wait now to cash in latter instead of trying to win now.

One of the biggest factors is their division. They have had, arguably (I do not know for certain, but I am pretty sure) the easiest division in football, so over the last decade, they have almost been guaranteed a playoff spot. No other team has had the same situation as the Patriots. Every other division has been at least competitive between a couple of teams.

So they can trade a late first round pick to get a 2nd and a future first. They can afford to let talented players walk to keep their cap under control and get compensatory picks.

Other team shave to play the "win now" mode. The Patriots can afford to play the long game. Their division doesn't look to be competitive any time soon.
