What’s up with Nola.com being behind a pay wall now?

Recently I’ve tried to read articles in their sports section and I keep getting redirected to a page that says “News without subscribers is impossible” and prompted to pay like $15 a month for their newspaper or $9.99 for online access. The only good thing about The Advocate/ Nola was that it was free and convenient. Also, they usually did a good job covering High School sports and recruiting.

Are there any other websites that cover news and sports for Louisiana?

So since I’ve been overseas I have kept up with Northeast Louisiana high school sports through KNOE.com; there might be alternatives through the television websites for you down there. For conservative political issues the Hayride covers the legislature pretty well. Dandydon used to post high school scores but I haven’t been keeping up as much in the past few years, so I’m unsure if Scott posts the scores from around the state like his dad did. Hope that helps.

The Pulitzer price winning times picayune was a GREAT newspaper. Even Nola. Com was better than most until John George purchased it. I knew from the advocates website that it would be ruined with the quickness. Sure enough pop ups and slow jerking loading followed by a pay wall. It’s a dang shame that one politician wannabe rich idiot can ruin such a storied past. I loathe John George’s. Such a historical past and one ritual I had for 45 years wiped out by one man. There are a few things the Internet has ruined and newspapers is the most egregious one.

It amazes me how people complain about paying for any content on the internet. Yet they have no problem giving away all their information to Google and Facebook so that they can get content for "free".

It would probably get less complaining if there hasn’t been a history of news sites putting information behind a paywall then becoming irrelevant.

At this point it is a discredited business model.

I remember when the Times Pic had the nation's highest number of subscribers...one of the nation's most purchased papers.

Since the 90s the rule has always been either host a website that sells a product or host a website with free content, attract traffic and sell advertising. Nola.com and the advocate want both.

Advocate bought out NOLA Times Picayune and got rid of most of the decent writers.
Same ownership.
The more clicks you get the better your product will be, I guess they haven't figured that out yet.

NY Daily News is $1 a month and people refuse to pay that. Who is going to pay $10 to read shitty Nola.com?
