Dad used to have a radio service in his company truck.

Had to radio the dispatcher to make the call for you and patch you in.

Early 80’s.
When I worked for Holiday Inn-Holiday City (HI worldwide HQ in Memphis prior to relocating to Atl) it was Summer-Fall 1983 between my Freshman/Soph year at LaTech. I had a company pickup, gas card, pager, CB and Ham radios. Both the CB and Ham in the truck, the pager on me.

Worked in Facilities Design and Management, assigned a large section of a warehouse packed full of office furniture and furnishing. Desks, typewriter extensions for desk ("secretary table"), paintings, lamps, etchings, end tables, coffee tables, bookcases...all of it included in their database. Sooo much "fun" staring at a green monochrome terminal waiting for it to match id#'s to descriptions for queries.

The showroom building was pretty cool though. They always had import beer on ice in a polished galvanized aluminum tub. Very nice "elegant" room displays with nice soft beds to grab a quick nap every now and then.

Still chuckle remembering walking through International Finance section the days following KAL shootdown and hearing all these new grad, know-it-all high finance, and attorneys, trying to locate the shootdown on a huge globe as I was walking by. I walked over, spun the globe from where they were looking and said "here". Walked off as they were saying: "Oh, he's right. There it is. Who was that guy?" (they didn't know the Mediterranean from the Pacific)

Donny Weil of Weil cleaners had an early carphone
I seem to remember him saying that an hour of talk time was $150/month.
This was around 81-82.

I bet he was glad when cellular hut the NE Louisiana area.

We moved to Virginia in the mid 70s. My dad went to Auburn, and If you missed the Prudential College Scoreboard show with Dave Diles you wouldn’t know the Auburn score until you got the paper Sunday morning.

We were actually better off. We learned to communicate face to face. Something this younger generation is not good at. We also did not spend ten hours a day with our heads looking at a phone. We played outside in the heat and we were not soft like your generation. Good times

Pay phones. It sucked when they went from a quarter to 35 cents

I’m getting old. I was a freshman at LSU when pay phones went from a nickel to a dime. Circa 1978-79

Even better, phone cards + system voicemail + pay phone.

On my first sales route, you’d stop at a pay phone to check voicemail from customers, then use your phone card to call them back on a pay phone.

My Dad had a credit card he used for long-distance calls, provided by his employer, Local 692 in B.R.

Here's how you'd google something. My grandparents still have theirs in pristine condition. Honestly, when was the last time you've seen someone - anywhere - pull out one of these?

Carrier pigeons. The stench was horrific. The poor had to holler.

Nothing. We waited until we could get to a landline to make a phone call, or spoke with each other F2F. We didn't need to call or text every time a thought (or brain fart) popped inside our head.

It’s still like this at times. Especially in Louisiana Where road signs/street signs tend to be nonexistent.
