Heard that yesterday. I was pretty shocked by it but then remembered it's NPR so I should have expected it.
Anything historically viewed as "good" has to be tarnished now to discredit the past and the morality established through that past.

Ghandi said some very racist things about Africans. He clearly had some very racist view points. This is not made up or new. It is not a secret either.
That said we know how this will play out. Side A will become outraged. Side B will become outraged at their outrage. Side C will be annoyed by both A and B.

NPR isn't the first to question Gandhi. Christopher Hitchens did it numerous times throughout his career. While the subject of questioning his racism and sexism is a bit odd. I see nothing wrong with questioning his moral heroism in some aspects.
