What is it about Kevin Steele that caused him to fail at LSU and yet find success at Auburn?

Great question. The odd thing is, he was a highly regarded hire for LSU. I know people bashed him for giving up 70 points to West Virginia in a bowl game but aside from that people thought he was a good hire.

Talent, especially on DL. And probably more freedom to run his unit.

nothing in his resume suggests that he will sustain an elite defense. espn fpi has auburn tagged for 2 more losses. guess who they predict auburn will lose to?

LSU’s defense gave up 19 or more points in the first 10 games for the first time EVER in Kevin Steele’s year here.

The guy has an elite DL. Coaching looks easy when you have monsters up front.

Although, is a five-loss campaign in 2018 success?
Giving up 30 points to Tennessee is success? 52 to Bama?

He wins on talent, not scheme. He’s a great recruiter, but our overall talent and depth levels were way down thanks to the end of Chavis’ reign and his BBQ buddy, Brick. If he had stayed and re-stocked the cupboard, he likely would have been fine here.

Steele took over for Muschamp at Auburn. Remember how Fournette made that defense look early in the season his last year? They were young, but had talent. By the end of the season, Muschamp had them playing a lot better and they held their own. The table was set a lot better for Steele there and to his credit, he’s kept it going.

He has a HUGE pension in the Alabama system. He already had years into it and needed more years to be qualified for a very large guaranteed pension. There was not that opportunity in the Louisiana system. Dude went where he would be taken care of after football and not have to work for it. Had to guarantee he would be there for a few years to get it. He went through the motions here apparently when he had a good idea Miles was on his way out.

Chavis left the defensive line a shell of its former self.

Auburn has an elite defensive line thus an elite defense.

Alleva wouldnt let Miles hire Arranda after running off Chavis weakening Miles by design. Steele was another great hire by Miles, especially at that time and with all the turmoil going on.

But, Steele quickly realized that the big knives were out for Miles and himself at LSU and he had to get the hell out of there and fast.

Steele has a complicated system and he needs more than 1 year to implement it entirely.

LSu had 3 different DC's in 3 years and then did it on offense. All under the old AD's watch. A total embarrassment for the LSU football program. Thank goodness for Ed O keeping the program damn strong and Miles grinding to the bitter end, even with 1 hand tied behind his back.

The state of Alabama has some tax friendly laws for govt coworkers as well. So when Auburn came calling Steele double flipped the frick outta there.

If AU wins this weekend.....

Kevin Steele was a solid hire. He's a good defensive coordinator. He's sometimes inconsistent, but he's better than the rant made him out to be. Remember at the time, Auburn thought they stole our DC and the rant thought they did us a favor. To an extent, both were right. Steel was better than his record at the time he left LSU.

Despite all of the recent hand wringing, I still think Aranda is a better DC than Steele. Even if you want to argue that they are similar with X's and O's, there is no doubt that Aranda is a much better fit with the current coaching staff than Steele was with his. Steele is indeed currently benefiting from a wealth of DL talent but I would put him as the second best DC in the SEC.

He was here for just one year right? The overall consensus here was that he wasn't that great but it is hard to judge based on one season.
