A top defense publication is reporting that “a strong and persistent rumor has emerged” that Alabama’s Redstone Arsenal is leading a heated competition among states to become headquarters of the new Space Command. “At least on paper,” Breaking Defense reported Tuesday. The publication says the rumor “comes from multiple sources with access to and knowledge of military space at senior levels.” That’s a necessary caveat because basing choices are among the Defense Department’s closest-held secrets.

Hosting the new command would make Huntsville and Alabama key to defending both American military and commercial satellites in space. It would bring thousands more well-paid and highly skilled professionals to the state. Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle said today he thought Huntsville would prove more affordable than the alternative sites, but hadn’t seen any confirmation it had tested out that way until reading the article today. Battle said he hopes the decision will be made on the merits. The city is already involved in most of America’s space and missile defense work, Battle said, and it is affordable. “We have all the elements of what the Space Command needs to have here,” Battle said.

Get I-20 at Tuscaloosa cleaned up and I'll concede Huntsville is a good choice.

Was just up there a couple of weeks ago.
I can’t speak to the facilities at Redstone itself, but the Space Center is top notch. Better museum than Johnson in Houston.

Might be good short term but government workers aren’t necessarily the voting GOP type.

Well, if we are gonna populate Mars...we will need a group of people who don't mind sex with close family members!

Good for Alabama if it happens

That will never happen.
Good news is that the Birmingham project looks great so far. Those guys are kicking arse.

Not sure why it keeps being reported as Huntsville, that's not where this is being built, but it is in Alabama. I work with the metal supplier who is fabricating the steel, it's some high dollar stuff. Plenty of high paying jobs around this new plant. Since somebody higher up rejected the plant being built in Indianapolis and Houston, Alabama was the other place that was eyed for this project. That's all I'll say about it since this a rumor

The actual military population at RSA is pretty damn small, and they are outnumbered by the affirmative action civilian employees there. The number of actual NASA employees, is far outweighed by the civilian contractors who show up from everywhere.
Folks, I grew up there, and worked there. It was cool at one time, not anymore.
I understand that some people want growth, so that their property values might grow, and I made a lot of money there, but you can turn something nice, into something that you hate.
One of the worst curses in the world: "May you get everything that you want".

Too racist to put Space Command HQ in Detroit or Compton.

Lyndon Johnson fricked Huntsville out of Mission Control and moved it to Houston. Glad to see Trump will be returning the favor.
Love the way he treats Alabama like it’s a swing state.

Good choice. If aliens retaliate and destroy the entire state nothing valuable will be lost.
