I recommend following LegitStreetCars on Youtube if you are interested in buying early to mid 2000s Benz or BMWs. He has an E55 and makes videos about all the maintenance he does on them. Will save you a ton of $$$ since he shows how you can fix various common issues.

I've watched all of legitstreetcars E55 vids and probably all highly viewed E55 YouTube vids as well.

My 2010 C63 with 33k miles just had headbolt failure - was still under the MB extended warranty (by a few days), so MB picked up the tab for new headbolts, lifters, etc. total was around $8k
ouch.

It's a fun car but you're looking at a money pit and loss of about 3-4 grand.

My wife had a Mercedes SUV and around 30,000 miles started having suspension problems and then a wheel bearing failed. One of the electrical components failed after the warranty ran out and we decided to get rid of it with all the hassles. Not sure if I would want a 2005 model and that one looks like that one has had its share of problems.

Considering you’re going to spend a significant amount on maintenance, I’d push the budget higher and get a newer model year.

2005 E55 AMG

126K miles.

I drive 4-5K miles a yr and this would be a second car.

Do you like throwing thousands and thousands of dollars at vehicle repairs? If so, then jump on it.

Who in their right minds owns a formerly expensive German car out of warranty? A dipshit, that's who. Or Tyler Hoover. Same thing.

Mercedes Benz used to be great cars before they started mass producing about a dozen different models. Of course, AMG is German build to different standards.

The car he is looking at had the suspension replaced as well as coolant issues. Not sure if he won’t be putting a lot of money into that being a 12 year old vehicle with high miles.

Not two months ago you started a thread whining about your wife not letting you get an AMG S class with over 60k miles on it...

Your memory is fuzzy. I started a thread about my wife thinking I was materialistic for wanting to build a bigger house, buy more land and get an s63 (I didn’t specify miles because I hadn’t picked one out yet, but would never buy one with 60k miles).

I bought an s550 4matic with 20k miles and tuned it to around the hp of the stock s63. I’ll keep it for a couple years and then look at the S63 or whatever else looks awesome at that point.

I'm really tempted to go buy a C43 AMG. Would be an incredibly stupid thing to do since I'm still in school, but how many people get to own an AMG in college.

Any AMG owners know how the yearly maintenance cost is compared to owning a regular Benz?

You want to spend over 40 grand on an AMG mercedes while you're still in college?

I have my degree already, and grad school is paid for. Stipend + money I've saved up would allow me to easily afford it. The only wildcard is the reliability of the C43 and maintenance costs.

shite if you don't have student loans and money to burn then by all means.

That being said, you can get a 3 year old Porsche Cayman for similar money. It's certainly less practical, but how many people can say they drove a Porsche in college?

Or you could get a 2 or 3 year old Macan S and keep 5k+ in your pocket.

Really what I'm trying to say is Porsche > Mercedes. Both will be expensive when they break, but the Porsche will most likely break less.

I've been trying my best to stay away from a $50K car.

50K + ttl is $55K.

3 yrs of ownership and that car might go for $30K on a good day.

That's $25K of depreciation to own a car for 3yrs.
