What do we think about the major criticism of "The Joker"

So I've been reading the reviews that have been coming out. They are positive. It's in the 80s on rotten tomatoes and in the high 70s on metacritic

There are some complaints about the direction the movie goes in, but more and more I've seen criticism about how it handles the joker. It presents him as a man who means well, but it's the world who wrongs him. Hes a lonely, depressed, psycho who is shunned by the world and therefore, his only outlet is violence. Almost like it glorifies his decent into mass villainy. And it seems like a number of critics are touching on the aspect that, due to the fricked up nature of our current society, it could possibly be viewed as a rallying cry to the next Walmart el Paso shooter to incite mass violence

Where do we fall on this? If something does happen, this wouldnt be the first time a movie has played some role. Should we be wary of how movies approach decent into villainy? If we go down this road, when do we start approaching censorship?

Did you see Maleficent?

They remade that evil sorceress bitch into a victim of domestic violence.

And the more evil Stefan became the more Scottish he sounded.

It looks like Taxi Driver to me. Travis Bickle was always kind of a weird a-hole so I never had sympathy for him. Maybe Joker will be that way. I've seen reviews saying he's more like an incel, which modern society tends to shun and villainize. I'm sure some people will see him as a sympathetic character but most probably won't.

I'm interested because the trailers present him as sympathetic. At least that's how I viewed it. I wonder what the overall tone of the movie will be like, though

Not sure but I am gonna wait a couple weeks to see it just in case. When some shite goes down it's usually opening weekend.

Eh probably overreactions. Probably director’s decision to try and make him more sympathetic

It would be really disappointing if they made the joker out to be a villain worthy of sympathy.

well prepare to be disappointed. Trailer 1 showed him getting beat up and picked on by a bunch of kids.

Any good villain has strong motivations. That doesn't mean you have to sympathize with his actions, but there are legitimate reasons why they do what they do. That's why they're a good villain. It doesn't mean you or anyone would ever do what they do, but his motivations are strong, and clear. Most people understand that and will like the movie for it's quality IMO. If someone is that strongly influenced by a work of fiction to actually go out and murder people, that can hardly be blamed on a fictional character in a fictional story. It's ludicrous.

FFS are they going to turn Batman into a bully? WTF DC?

Batman is arguably the most well known comic IP in history. His origin, rogues gallery, and ethos are universally known. Everywhere. No matter how good the MCU is, you make a quality Batman movie and it’s going to kill. You’ve got a built in audience.

And you’re going to frick up the Joker? Oh my DC, what is going on? Is it not enough to just focus on telling good stories?

Have you seen Batman v Superman?

Seriously though, no. We will probably never see this Joker in any more movies at all.

The “poor me” villain is really nothing new. It’s tiring and boring imo but not necessarily ground breaking.

Makes joker look like creepy loser incel who rises up and sticks it to liberal society, which all those types of guys will eat and praise they same way they praise Durden, and Bateman

Fits the comic it’s based on.
