Simple question re: drug testing.

Why are we randomly drug testing players at all? Is there an NCAA or SEC mandate? If so, why does such a mandate exist, and is it even legal?
I went to LSU undergrad for 4 years, LSU Med school for 4 years, and was an LSU resident for 5 years. Not once did I undego any drug testing whatsoever. Why are the football players different?

I think there are NCAA testing
but they don't test for weed (see Fulton's situation)
Concerning but yeah i feel like outside what the SEC/NCAA requires we shouldn't hold them to a higher standard than students.
and for the "maybe jsut follow the rules" crowd
WE ALL LOSE WITH THESE RULES.
WE ARE frickING OURSELVES

The NCAA has a drug testing program with a set of penalties for positive tests.
Each memeber school is required to have their own program.

Nope. But I drank a lot of bourbon. Does that count?
Just frustrates me that these kids are held to a standard that other students are not held to. I would think that a good lawyer could make a run at the NCAA on this one.

Did you do performance enhancing drugs?

The Ncaa is the most hypocritical organization. We have fat frat boys hazing and coeds you know with professors. But, let’s penalize guys lifting 12 mo a year and playing a sport where significant injury exist every play for weed. Really. Oh, and they bring in millions for the university. Makes perfect sense.

I don't have a problem with them testing, nor would I have a problem with not testing.
Where I take issue is if LSU is testing and other schools (especially SEC schools) are not. If it was a rule that every SEC school had to test X amount of times, then that's fine. If we are doing something that others aren't, then we (or the entire SEC) are doing something wrong somewhere.

I have a friend who played at a large university. He said when they tested, it was randomly the same 5 or so people nearly every time. Not bc they knew they smoked, they knew those 5 did not smoke.

We tested very rarely when I played in college. And you knew they were going to, because the coaches reminded us in meetings, weight room, practice, etc. for about 2-3 weeks before it happened
and it was only a handful of players.

Nope. Alcohol and cigarettes, which are much more damaging than weed, are perfectly fine. You just have to do the government approved drugs.

This! WHY would we be doing beyond the requirements set by the NCAA and/or SEC? It’s sent players to other schools and you know good and well it’s being used against us in recruiting. Woody needs to reassign the two main pinheads over there, maybe they can help DerekRee post on TD.

Couldn't agree more. It's a dumb move if for no other reason than recruiting. That's just a reality.
I'd also be curious as to how the PAC 12 handles these issues given that most of their schools are in places where it's legal.

Well, when I was LSU, it was truly random.
Totally unannounced, you got a message to report to the stadium to pee in a cup.

It is random...but clearly LSU's compliance department is much more strict than any other school. I was told Woodward cleaned house but apparently not.

What's funny about that is one of their main arguments against any sort of benefits is that the normal students don't have access to it, but at the same time holding them to a standard different from the normal student.
I ran cross country in college and we had a drug test once a semester but it was basically "send someone over to get tested". That's right, we got to choose who got tested. It was a joke.

The NCAA mandates testing for PEDs and certain drugs. I don't think weed is a part of their mandate.
