I just attended my first one tonight, concerning a nearby city park I live a block away from. There is a master plan to funnel grant money into the park and tonight my city had a public meeting and I decided to show up. About 10 other people went, mostly neighbors of mine I have never met until tonight. I’ve only lived in the house I am in for about a year.

I believe meetings are underutilized by the public and every citizen should feel privileged to have the opportunity to have input regarding the local community. I look forward to the next one.

Have you guys ever attended one?

I’d rather citizens start attending congressional sessions.

Is this the plot of an episode of parks and rec?

Honestly, I felt like I was part of the episode.

I don’t, but do keep tabs on the agendas and minutes and things they’re proposing/voting on

Live and let live is a great motto to follow, but when it comes to community areas such as city parks and development of these, public input is important. Especially for those who neighbor the park.

There were concerns of traffic flow and a dog park being built into the existing area.

Real talk: public meetings are an antiquated ceremony, and your showing up or not probably doesn’t matter. This isn’t cynicism; I’m just saying it’s the wrong venue for your passion. You should instead request a face to face meeting with your elected official. That’s easier to get than you think, and your voice will be heard much louder. You also get the added benefit of hearing from your elected official some of the considerations you s/he’s aware of that you may not be privy to.

Downvote away; but you’d be surprised how responsive many of your elected officials actually are to you. Regardless of party, most truly want to do the right thing and want to represent their constituents to the best of their ability.

It’s easy to be a cynic and think they’re all crooks and stuff. But 99% of the people saying that have never even tried to sit down with their elected official.

Most impactful government decision to us was when our city council approved street parking. I attended that approval meeting but council members were already paid for and of course voted “yeah I’ll take your money and I’ll let you splurge on my face”. Just more government officials taking facials from donors/non-residents.

Damnit you posted 6 hours too late to remind me of the village meeting about letting people sell weed here. Not a lot of millennials and SJW here yet but I'm sure some city folk came in to stir shite up.

No, because those corrupt frickers have them before 5 pm so the only people that can show up are the jobless who they are pandering to because they know that those with jobs are too fricking stupid to show up at every election and are only going to bitch and moan instead of voting those clowns out.

My city has a population of less than 6,000. More tourists stay here in a week than the entire population living here year-round. And when grants are being applied for for improvements to a park, the city is going to listen to what the community wants even though the city isn’t paying for it from taxes.

Maybe so in a place that small. But you better believe that if somebody's buddy has an idea and they can help them out on the taxpayer's dime, then it's going to happen.

The problem with the whole taxes thing is we don’t have a sales tax in our state. My city just announced over the summer as being designated a “resort town,” even though there is nothing “resorty” here other than being the gateway to Glacier.

Whitefish has had a resort tax of 3% for years and now we have one in my city. Locals aren’t terribly happy about it, but we get a break on property which is nice. I’m tired of tourists coming here, using our roads and facilities, and not paying for it via a tax. Not everyone visiting stays in hotels, VRBOs or air bnbs... campers get away with paying nothing.
