As Americans should we talk more about Gavrilo Princip and his role in our history?

The butterfly effect of history fascinates me.
Gavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke Ferdinand which eventually led to WW1 and Europe wiping much of itself out to the United States’ benefit. Of course WW1 led to WW2 and our eventual superpower status.
I actually think if one looks at how things shook out Gavrilo Princip is one of the most important people to the United States’ history. A person could have told him that his actions were going to indirectly help create the most powerful and arguably most prosperous country in the history of the world.

It was a tragedy for the western world.

WWI was the beginning of the end of the Republic. If Princip is to be remembered for his contributions to this country, it should not be fondly.

Congrats on listening to Dan Carlin

I think he is pretty well recognized as one of the most pivotal figures in world history.

He is very important in history, but America was already heading towards greatness about two decades before. Our industrial might was maturing in the 1890s, our banking industry was starting to increase. Also, our population began to explode. Now, with war comes technological breakthroughs that increase productivity, but let’s not act like America wasn’t already pushing her weight around in the world’s oceans before that fateful day.

The notion that, but for his act, none of that other stuff would have happened, seems like folly to me.
Guy just happened to be the smoldering tinder that started the inferno. Their were plenty of others floating around that could have and probably would have.

The first and second big ones are the reason the UK sucks these days. They lost so many of their men.

Can't recommend it enough
First went back in 98, it's changed a lot
Still mystical

I study the causes of WW1 as a side hobby. WW1 would have occurred even without the assassination of Ferdinand and his wife. Russia had borrowed a boat load of money from France and was having trouble paying it back. There was a naval arms race ongoing between Britain, France, Germany, and to a lessor extent Italy and Russia. The Balkans were a powder keg, they wanted their independence but there was a crew of different tribes of religions and cultures existing elbow to elbow. The Ottoman Empire who once controlled this area were fizzing out and Romania and Bulgaria were struggling with Austria for control of the Balkans. Without Princip the war may have started a couple of years later, but it would have still started. Studying this is fascinating because many parallel ,similar events took place when Barry Obama was president.

There’s a lot to be said for the chief of staff for Austria-Hungary jonesing for a war with Serbia for a long time. If it hadn’t been the assassination, it’d have been something else.
