Rank em. With Felker on hiatus I’ll remove him from consideration. Here’s how I see it currently.
1. John Moreland
2. Tyler Childers
3. Mike Harmeier
4. Jason Isbell
5. Cody Jinks

Move up Isbell. Drop Jinks and add Sturgill.

I won’t argue with moving isbell but I’m not sure what to do with Sturgill at the moment. I’m expecting a dance mumble rap ep any day now lol.

My big 3
Sturgill Simpson
Jason Isbell
Tyler Childers
Others in the regular rotation
Chris Stapleton
Colter Wall
Cody Jinks
Margo Price
Kacey Musgraves
John Moreland
Justin Townes-Earle
I know Stapleton and Musgraves are very popular but they are both great.

Totally agree on #1.
2-5 is a jumbled up mess of awesome songwriters...Not sure who goes where, but Isbell and Childers are on there somewhere.
Sturgill Simpson keeps coming up as well...not only can he write...but he has an eye for cultivating other talent. I didn't realize until recently that he produced Childer's albums.
ETA...once he gets through with his tribute album phase...I still believe there are some awesome songs left in Steve Earle as well.

Sturgill is by far the most creative and interesting. His catalogue has the widest variety of sounds to it. He’s absurdly talented.

Sturgill does have a more varied catalogue than Childers...but Sturgill is also a decade and a half further into his career than Childers. The guy isn't even 30, and is cranking out some amazing stuff.

I really enjoy Musgraves but aren’t most of her hit songs co-written by Shane McAnally?....who might actually deserve to be on this list.

Random thought...but one of my favorite songwriters 25 years ago, or so, was Mac McAnally. I thought they (Shane and Mac) were related to each other...but it turns out...

I love Todd Snider...but I have been under the belief that his best days are behind him. East Nashville Skyline is the last album of his that I really loved. Since then, I've been pretty indifferent.

Joe Pug and James McMurtry would be in my top 5.

John Prine, Willie Nelson, and Billy Joe Shaver are still alive (and performing). Dwight Yoakum has written a ton of great songs. Hell, REK. Steve Earle. Iconic country music songwriters.
