California’s largest operator of recycling redemption centers has shut down and laid off 750 employees. The Mercury News reported Monday that the company, Ontario-based RePlanet, has closed all 284 of its centers.RePlanet President David Lawrence said the company stopped operating because of increased business costs and falling prices of recycled aluminum and PET plastic. The move comes three years after RePlanet closed 191 of its recycling centers and laid off almost 300 employees.

I'm starting to think there's a bigger plan in place for the people who advocate the higher min wage.
Massive layoffs, then the State takes over industry.

nicely done libs!
You take a process that almost all of us can agree with, a Green action that many, many of us do. Something that reduces landfill space requirements and saves energy. And responsibly uses the Earth's resources.
And you frick it up because you cannot understand that entry-level, minimum wage jobs are NOT SUPPOSED to be for parents trying to raise four chirens.

The recycling market as a whole has fallen off a cliff. OCC was almost $200/ton a few years ago. Now you're lucky to get $30 for it. Cheaper plastics like film, pet color, and hd color isn't that far behind. It's hard to be in the recycling business right now.
Not saying the higher wages didn't hurt, just saying that this is the eventuality for these types of businesses unless things change soon.

Recycling centers all over the country are closing and it's not bc of minimum wage

falling prices of recycled aluminum and PET plastic
Which one played a bigger role? Decreased profits/revenue for their products or increased environmental and payroll costs?

If the world is going to end in 10 years I’m not sure why they even care about recycling

It's now $25 to get a bad car wash in San Jose. They say it's because of minimum wage hikes.
I'm now just cleaning my car my self. It's about $12 to drive it through a car wash and then I vaccum out the inside myself.
Everything has gotten even more expensive. Lots of local restaurants have closed.
It's really weird living here now because of bad policies.

Meeeehhhhh lol dont hurt yourself with this stretch now lol. I aint saying it didnt put the final nail in but i think due to the cost of recycling it just wasnt nor has it been a money maker in a long time. Im sure they were mostly surviving on Government subsidies and even more money from the California government
