I know that references for potential LSP Academy candidates get called. I was a reference for a colleague who was a young, part-time college student. He ended up getting in.
Fast forward about 6 years...my wife, infant son, and I were heading back to BR from a family vacation to Florida where we had left really late. It’s about 1am and I’m rolling around 82 between Hammond and BR in a rental car with South Carolina plates. I come up on a trooper and had no time to slow down. He lit up and pulled me over then called out over his loudspeaker to step out of the vehicle. The spotlight was so bright that I couldn’t even hardly look in that direction. Next thing I hear is “Hey, Booyow Lastname, what’s up big daddy?”
I’d never been so happy to see that loggerhead fricker walk towards me.

Calling references. Not sure where this got confusing.

Ah, gotcha.

I never call professional references. 90% of the time it's their coworker or friend acting like a manager and they know about it.

I couldn't imagine working for an organization that doesn't give its managers that latitude when making decisions about who to hire.
By law you can only confirm employment and if they are rehire-able or not.

I have lied to companies several times for friends to help them get jobs. I make them sound like amazing workers and they got the jobs the 3 times i have done it
Same here.. and i’ve had friends lie for me as well, to cover gaps in employment on my resume or whatever.. or just to give a glowing review for my performance, even if the company i worked for at the time was a dysfunctional mess that impeded financial success.
In today’s world, companies will cut you loose at the drop of a hat with zero notice, and there is no loyalty.. So in my opinion, if you aren’t hustling, then you aren’t trying.

considering it's a personal reference and not a professional one i'd say you either can't read or are a bad reference

If I were to fill out an application I would not put the president of "ABC Company" as a reference. He obviously knows who I am by the company I work for, but does not know me on a personal level.

They call references.
I applied for a job and then I heard from the company several months later.
In the interim, my references had changed and I actually am planning to kill one of the prior references.
I got stood up for the interview. I’m pretty sure they had called the guy after setting up the interview.

The couple I’ve times I’ve been called for a reference, I just say “Tell that son of a bitch I’ve been looking for him, and he still owes me a hundred bucks!”

You really think a personal reference the applicant puts on a resume is going to say something bad about them?

I just can't understand why someone would agree to be a reference for someone then say bad things about them.

I've had some not so great coworkers that when they asked our supervisor to be a reference, the supervisor told them it probably wasnt a good idea.

I recently had to set aside 30 minutes to be a reference.
The questions were like I was being interviewed for the job.
It was kind of stressful, not wanting to mess-up this guys
chance at a good job.
He did get the job so I guess it went ok.

Had a guy i knew in college, he was a class under me. Smart guy but sleezy and known to be a POS. In fact I’m fairly certain he got caught helping his fugly arse fat girlfriend in college. We were not friends in any way.
Anywho, I got hired by Company A, he desperately wanted to work for Company A too. So he, without informing me, me as a reference on his resume. When contacted I informed then Company A recruiting/hiring manager of this sneaky arse move. Dude somehow still got the job and it seriously upsets me still today that he pulled that shite
