Had two girls (no pics) in the last two weeks ask if they could use me as a personal reference on job applications they are filling out. Does anyone ever really call for these? I don't know if I should be prepared with what I know about them and their qualifications, or embellish the entire thing to make them look like the ideal candidate. I don't want to undersell them either, but these are not people I worked directly with so my knowledge of their work ethic, computer skills, etcetera is not well known to me. What would you do?

P.S. I would hire them both in a heartbeat.

There’s only one thing to do. Leverage your influence to get that booty.

I call professional references frequently when I make hiring decisions. But I don't give a shite what Uncle Joe or their Dad's best friend has to say about them.

I have lied to companies several times for friends to help them get jobs.

I make them sound like amazing workers and they got the jobs the 3 times i have done it

If they care about who they hire and do their job well, yes.

Best rule of thumb is be honest. If you make them out to be better than they actually are, then it makes your name look bad plus you're not doing then any favors by helping them get a job they aren't qualified for

Tell the truth. If you didn’t work closely with them, but heard good things about them, and would hire them, say that.

An old co worker asked me recently if he could use me as a reference. He was a slacker and sort of a high maintenance employee. I said sure, and made him sound like a great guy when they called.

I just can’t be a dick I guess.

You really think a personal reference the applicant puts on a resume is going to say something bad about them? There's a reason why they out them on there. And professional references have moved almost exclusively to just confirming employment.

I guess it depends on what organization you work for

I call professional references all the time and ask specific questions about the candidate. Several times I've asked candidates to provide additional references if the ones they originally submitted aren't relevant to their professional background/skills.

I thought that's all they could say.

Almost any company that has a dedicated HR department won't do this.

That is kind of my train of thought. One definitely said they needed a professional reference, which I do qualify for, but in our working relationship I don't see her skills in action, so to speak. Her LinkedIN has things listed on it I did not even know she could do.

My organization has a dedicated HR department.

I couldn't imagine working for an organization that doesn't give its managers that latitude when making decisions about who to hire.

Do you know who her supervisor is/was? If so, talk to that person and get their perspective.

It is possible she embellishes her linkedin. Shocking, I know.
