quote:it is on its last leg right now. It’s only a matter of weeks before they are going to close it. It is in terrible shape right now cause they know it’s going to close. It used to be supported by the regulars and students would play during the midday. The students are not playing anymore and it has pretty much ran it’s course. It’s a shame cause the course was in beautiful shape earlier this year
Played LSU today, and the place has turned into a complete goat ranch. Just don’t even bother anymore, because they sure aren’t putting any effort into the course.

When I was a student I probably played City Park more than LSU.

On the bright side there will be ample parking for football next year

LSU and the state need to find a way to keep this open....and make it a course that attracts people and students.
As the flagship school, LSU does not need to let this fold.

No, thanks. We have enough taxpayer funded golf in Baton Rouge. Plus, there is no moving LSU golf team from U-Club which would be the only thing that would make it reasonable to invest in that course.

I did an internship and course credit at a university with a decent university course.
The university closed it - Now the current administration wishes they had the golf course - and had invested in the past to keep it a quality area for golfers.

Would need to know a lot more about what University that was and the economy and weather of the area it was in. Baton Rouge already has a crap ton of cheap golf available due to BREC plus much of year people are worried about LSU Sports, Hunting and Fishing. Not to mention Hurricanes, Floods, Freezes and general bad weather. Not to mention high paying jobs are not growing in the area.
Golf is a poor investment in Baton Rouge.
The LSU golf team will not even consider playing there...ever.

The golf team playing there isn't an issue. The course could be very profitable. The problem is the land the course is on is extremely valuable.
It's a decision the university has to make. They could have a moderately profitable golf course or more land to expand. Whatever is most valuable to those decision makers is what will happen with the course.

The golf course is a terrible layout, is nearly always in bad shape with the worst pace of play in the city. Other than nostalgia why do people want it to be kept open?

I'm not arguing to keep it open, but it does provide a cheap place to play for people learning to golf.

There are other cheap options in area.
If cheap golf meant something South Louisiana would be the golf Mecca of the United States. There would be more players from here than anywhere else. Cheap golf producing young golfers is a myth.

Regarding LSU Team, It isn’t the issue but it is one of many reasons why the course isn’t needed now nor ever.

Too much cheap golf is bad. So yes, if you want golf courses to exist. Especially within city limits where land is expensive.
BR doesn’t have a problem with expensive golf. There are plenty of cheap options. LSU, City Park, Webb, Clark or Dumas. Copper Mill has specials all the time. The Island is having a free golf day. They are literally giving it away over there. The Bluffs is no longer expensive.
Family Memberships at many area clubs are very cheap. BREC offers annual passes that makes it even cheaper.

Well that’s just stupid. At least during my time in br, LSU was typically in much better shape.
I also just get bored at city park

I’d like to see more courses offer student discounts if LSU closes. To my knowledge it’s the only local course that offers it.

LSU - closing soon apparently
City Park - 9 holes par 32
Clark - closing soon
Dumas - closing soon
Copper Mill - 30+ minute drive
The Island - 30+ minute drive
The Bluffs - 45+ minute drive
If you want to play an 18 hole public course in Baton Rouge proper, Webb is your only option now.

After 3PM City Park, Webb, Dumas and Clark are all cheaper or in-line than LSU with Student Discount.
Before 3PM LSU is cheaper but not by much at all. All are in the $20 range.
There are days where you can get on courses with a lunch for under $30 in the BR Area.
Golf is very cheap in Baton Rouge as it is.

I would say at the most, LSU should operate as a driving range.

I have not seen anywhere that says this is true.
City Park: If this is how everyone feels about the course then why is it open? If it doesn't count as golf.
Is Santa Maria not BR proper?
Beaver is only 30+ minutes.
A 30 or 45 minute drive is nothing in most cities for an activity like golf. When I go to Houston or Dallas I am always driving a good bit to get to courses.
I just want to make sure I understand what everyone wants. Convenient golf within a five minute drive of their house, Cheap (but for the kids!!) and good conditions?
