The RPO offense does not need a dual threat QB
True. However, they need to be somewhat of a threat to run. Can’t just be a statue back there. Can’t have “happy feet” either.

Still adjusting ratings outside of 247
Yeah, but it’s from 247’s own ratings. Not the composite.
It does look like a mistake though because the composite should have changed substantially with the exponential drop in 247’s rankings.

he's not... he runs a 4.7 forty... agility needs a little work, but the dude has decent enough wheels to get out of the pocket, if need be...

Its not a mistake now, they finalized in the 700s. They explained it in a 247 thread I'm in.

but 247/ESPN thinks he's trash because of a "lack of mobility" for a pocket passer.
So what did 247 think about either of the Mannings? They damn sure were not mobile.

I’ve already voiced my opinion in past threads that I’m not that high on Johnson but I’ll defend him on this.
He’s as mobile a QB as there is without being considered “dual-threat”. He really excels at throwing on the run.
Has good pocket awareness and makes great decisions on when to run.
He’s not exactly slow either. You should watch his highlights.

Sounds like the makings of a decent QB if he can be accurate and make good decisions.
What exactly is it you don't like about him?

You basically just described what you need for every offense ever. The RPO is usually more play action than veer.
Finley, at his size, will always be a threat to pick up some yardage on an inside run.

Stats are screwed up...look at year 2016. He completed 19 of 9 pass attempts.

Arm strength. I compare him to Etling in that our offense would be considerably limited because of his lack of arm strength.
But according to Vol, he had a great camp when he came to LSU recently. And the coaches like him (obviously) so hopefully they are right.

It’s not really evident on his junior highlights because he seems to always be running for his life, but if allowed to set his feet he can put some zip on the ball. There are clips from this spring showing him throwing with some serious velocity. I don’t think arm strength is an issue at all, if there’s a common knock on him it’s consistency. He will make an NFL throw and then sail an easy one.

My biggest concern with any QB is a lack of accuracy.
Usually a QB's completion % doesn't change significantly from where they sit as Juniors or Seniors in HS. In essence...inaccurate HS QB's are typically inaccurate college Qb's.
Maybe there are extenuating circumstances with Johnson and the cast around him. I haven't looked at him that closely.

Yeah, I just disagree. That's not what it shows in his highlights.
hudl - Junior Yr
Again, I really do hope I'm wrong. His size and mobility are big pluses though.

The relationship between HS and college completion percentage is interesting but if there is one kid to buck that trend it’s Max. His highlights make it pretty clear he is pressured on every throw that isn’t a designed rollout, and a dozen times through the video it will cut to the next right as a perfectly thrown ball is about to hit a receiver in the hands, presumably because he dropped it. I really think if he was at a place like IMG he’d be one of the top QBs in the country.

Not sure what you're seeing but the guy has a strong arm, literally nobody I've seen has questioned that including all the experts. Has a ton of zip on the ball in the rivals clips. Mike Farrell even mentions in the video he has a strong arm.

Finally context and perspective.
But we give transfers into powerhouses like Eli Holstein who is now at Zachary and will throw to Hilton and a loaded receiving Corp in two years as a smart guy for leaving and a pass.
Kudos to the kid for staying loyal and playing with adversity with limited talent.
Same with Finley.

His arm strength is good. Very few kids can run to their off side and throw a serviceable ball. He does that pretty well.
I am not super impressed with him, I think he has the right last name and that has helped him some. But I also would not be shocked if he was a really good QB for us. God knows I will pull for him to be great.

Finley transferred from St. Thomas to Ponchatoula.

But it is proof why the composite is best
Not really. With that stark of a difference in rank, it’s more indicative of an error in judgement from one of the main recruiting sites.
