Isn't duck dynasty housed there? I assume that is most of the economy.

State Farm bailed on Monroe and put lots of people out of work. Maybe you Monroevians can tell us how that affected the area?

It will hurt the economy seriously. As long as the structure stands, they still have to pay property tax. State farms reason for leaving years ago was "lack of intellectual capital". I suspect CenturyLink has 5x employees state farm had.

So it will basically become New Orleans?

My cousins just built a new house there. Seems like a terrible decision to invest in a town that could basically go belly up in 10 years.

Amazing how few good companies are in Louisiana.
when you look at our demographics and government, it's not amazing

politicians have to be careful selling jobs that are for the upper middle, educated populations b/c the lower class, uneducated populations will get upset. our 2 major cities are incredibly dangerous, expensive, and you can't send your kids to public schools. all are strikes against companies locating here.

so our politicians focus on getting chicken farms and other unskilled jobs for the lower class, incentivizing brain drain, which further perpetuates the issues above. the demographics tipped a while back and there just aren't many ways to "fix" the state due to our incredibly large underclass.

and if anyone thinks i'm using code to talk about black people, you need to travel around this state more. it ain't a race thing

Yeah a duck call maker is more of an economic boost than a Fortune 100 telecommunications company

While a popular show, I doubt they are top 100 employer in the area. Mojo Duck probably employs more in the area.

FIL works for CenturyLink. He says it is only a matter of time before they move. The writing is on the wall

Won't be for at least a decade, and if it does it will be because they don't get their way with the state. Louisiana and Monroe is going to kiss the ring every time their incentives are expiring and they'll stay because it's so much cheaper than transition everything to the Denver are.

No, but his engineering company does and for all the shite that ULM gets, it does it's part carrying the economy for Monroe. However, most Northside Monroe-ites give zero fricks about the school. St. Francis Hospital is also a big employer in the area.

For all practical purposes, CenturyLink has pulled the plug on Monroe. They did re-up for a few more years but I think everyone can see the writing on the wall since most of their upper level managers have relocated to Colorado or been let go/replaced.

Most of CL's important business is on the West Coast/Central Plains. Many of the Senior Executives are holdovers from Qwest which was based in Denver. There's a significant pull towards Denver

I'm aware, but that has no impact on where their headquarters is
