$7.1 billion funding cut

I say that is a good start...would like to see him totally gut them before he leaves office.

The department of education needs to be eliminated.

This should be handled at the state and local level.

This would help with that huge spending bill they agreed to.

I was a beneficiary of a Federal TRIO program when I was in high school. It was a good program for low income families where the parents did not go to college. It provided me with seminars on test taking strategies, the ability to take dual enrollment courses (before this was popular in high schools) and once a semester, we took a cultural trip - something like the symphony or a touring Broadway play in Birmingham.

A few years ago, I was a member of a SACS committee that performed a site visit to a college that administered this program. It was not part of my official duties, but I was able to speak with the administrator over this program at this school. They were taking these kids to amusement parks and water parks, and the only college preparation that they were doing was once a year paying for them to take the ACT. No prep for it, just paying for it. The administrator was proud of all of this because "without this funding, some of these kids wouldn't be able to afford to go to a theme park or take the ACT."

I went back and pulled the data from TRIO. The average ACT score for the students in the program was around a 17. For my cohort in the early 90s in rural arse Alabama, it was approaching 30. Many of us made 30+

Same program. 20 years apart. This is when I had the change that the DOE needed to be completely gutted.

After awhile, the main benefactor of the programs become the administrators, not the kids. After awhile, the purpose of those programs is to maintain control and grow the administrative bureaucracy.

I once had sex with a female teacher. Good (not the sex, the cut in funding).

I was a tutor for TRIO at a community college while studying for the bar. We were grossly overpaid for the amount of work we provided. While I did get to help a handful of students, the ROI for the government was abysmal.

He should be tying this to the debt ceiling agreement, but my guess is that his advisers don't have the stomach for another government shutdown. He didn't handle the last one very well either. He really has very little leverage to get these types of cuts through the House.

Most teachers I know are against the government initiatives and politics involved with their jobs.
