An LSU sophomore and the former St. Charles Parish student of the year was struck and killed late Tuesday on Nicholson Drive near the Tigerland area just off the LSU campus, authorities said.

Sarah James, 19, was hit while crossing the street around 11:40 p.m., Baton Rouge police spokesman Sgt. L'Jean McKneely Jr. said in a news release Wednesday morning.

Very sad story.

It’s very dark in some of those areas. Between that and all the intoxicated people, it’s an accident waiting to happen. They need better lighting in that area.

Yep and very likely one or both had a fair amount of alcohol in their system.

This article doesn’t mention it, but I saw another article about it earlier. It said that they didn’t think impairment was a factor. Either way, it’s pretty sad.

It’s still crazy how the intersection of Bob Pettit/Jennifer Jean at Nicholson is not lit better. So many people dart back and forth across going to or coming out of Tigerland.

I'm shocked this doesn't happen all the time. People just wander around there with no regard for traffic

Sad. An track team mate was killed at that spot 30 years ago trying to cross at night. Some things never change.

The Reveille article about this said there have been 41 pedestrians struck by cars in the last five years around campus.

I don't believe it was hit and run. Heard on radio driver was not impaired, so I take it they know who hit her.
