An early morning accident on the Shell Auger Tension Leg Platform resulted in the death of two people and injured a third person Sunday, June 30.
A spokesperson for Shell said the accident occurred around 9 a.m. Sunday during a routine and mandatory test of our lifeboat launch and retrieval capabilities at Auger TLP, which is located 214 miles south of New Orleans in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.
Specifics about the accident were not immediately released, however there is no anticipated impact to the surrounding environment.

Here’s the company’s full statement:
It is with deep sadness that we report two fatalities as a result of an incident this morning at the Shell Auger Tension Leg Platform (TLP). One other non-life-threatening injury was sustained, and that individual is being treated at a nearby hospital.
The incident occurred at approximately 9 AM (CST) this morning, during a routine and mandatory test of our lifeboat launch and retrieval capabilities at Auger TLP, which is located 214 miles south of New Orleans in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.
Shell representatives have informed family members of those involved and are providing support. Out of respect to those families and their privacy, names are not being released.
In the over forty years that Shell has operated in the deep water Gulf of Mexico we have strived, above all, to ensure our people go home safely to their loved ones. It’s devastating when they do not. We deeply regret this loss of life within our Shell family and community.

Lifeboats off a platform probably lead to more injuries than they’ve saved...

The title led me to believe somebody got shot or stabbed

Terrible news.
They're required to be launched quarterly for testing. Wonder if this will bring about changes to support/cable designs. These cable/winch systems are better at launching than retrieving.

What hospital is “nearby” to it?
Dumb writer writes dumb.

Non oil baw question. Do they require people to be IN the lifeboat when it is launched? Is there some other way that two people could be killed when test launching a life boat?

Nearby to the author’s location was how I read it.

Can’t see how you did so but whatever.
We can certainly agree that it’s ambiguous at best.

You can lower and bring it back up without anyone inside. But somebody needs to be in it to lower it and launch it in order to drive it around. The cable probably failed while lowering the life raft to the water. It's a loooonnnnggggg way down from the life raft launch deck to the water on a TLP

Yeah, it seems like something routine, but on a tlp like that it’s a long way from where the lifeboats are kept to the waters edge. Sad to hear.

I worked on that TLP for two years. Prayers to those who lost their lives and their families. A lot of Mississippi and Louisiana boys on that rig.

Anyone with half a fricking brain can see that this incident had no potential for environmental impact
This is a tragic accident but I am glad they included it. Rumors to environmental impact would have began swirling and over taking the story

Without that statement CNN would be like:
“We are monitoring a situation in the Gulf of Mexico on an oil platform. We will update you on the Environmental impacts.”

Two people lost their lives in a tragic accident and we're forced to include statements about the fricking environment when there was ZERO potential for such impact. . . .
I thought the same thing. WJBO 1150-AM in BR is tagging the same thing at the end of each news segment on it (on hour and half-hour).
So fricking stupid. They might as well have said that the incident is not expected to cause a rise in oil prices.
Democrats, Leftists and SJWs are RUINING this world!

Right or wrong - Shell has social and ethical obligations to report if there is any environmental impact from an incident.
RIP to those lost
