Stupid question about intervening with police/suspect

Watching the news videos of the standoff with a shooter in Dallas yesterday and it showed a man filming the shootout from his window right above the shooter.
I don’t own a gun and am not up to speed on the law, but if that guy filming from his window were to grab his gun and take out the shooter, what would happen? Assuming he comes out with his hands up and explains everything.
Would he be charged with murder? Curious how that works?

Idk but once the police get there I am sure they want to handle the situation and not have random citizens taking a shot and possibly escalating things.

I agree. I’m assuming it’s a situation where the cops are outmatched or don’t have a good angle and the shooter is doing damage.

You mean like, “pardon me mr crazy person shooting at random folks in downtown Dallas, I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind lying face down with your hands behind your back-otherwise I’m gonna shoot you?”
No, murder charges would not be filed against the shooter in that instance.

When there was a sniper in the downtown Howard Johnson’s hotel in New Orleans, locals showed up with deer rifles and helped the police.

Anyone remember the issue with the traffic stop on Greenwell Springs about 15 years ago? The motorist that happened to see a man fighting a police officer stopped, told the perp to back off or he will shoot. The perp didn't back off and was about to get the officer's gun, so the motorist shot him. He probably saved the cop's life.

IMO that was an appropriate point to step in.

If a bystander was in legal possession of a gun (e.g. no felonies, no concealed carry issues, etc.) and killed this guy while he was shooting up the federal building I’m sure he would have been cleared. Probably detained initially, but cleared in the long run.
The problem is deciding when it’s warranted for a civilian to step in. For example - what if he hadn’t started shooting yet? Is there anything illegal about open carrying while wearing a tacti-cool outfit in Dallas? You better be certain someone’s life is in danger, and be ready to convince the detectives, DA, and possibly a jury.
Which, IMO, is how it should be. I don’t think we want every swinging dick with a 1911 playing hero as soon as they feel uncomfortable.

Yep. It was around 2007. I remember driving by that day and he was still laying in a body bag or a sheet over him in the auto zone parking lot. Every time I renew my conceal carry permit, the instructor always talks about this story.

Texas has stand your ground laws which are a bit more liberal for good guys with guns.

Legally it’s the same situation as any other. If you are defending yourself, OR A THIRD PARTY, from death or great bodily harm you may use deadly force to stop the threat. It doesn’t matter that he isn’t directly attacking you. In the active shooter situation, the trick is to not get blasted by the responding officers as they will shoot anyone with a gun at that point.
