Let’s cheer our boy on to completing the career slam in memorable fashion.

I like Phil. Always have but I understand why people don’t like him.

I like post money laundering Phil better.

Love Phil.
But his crazy arse showed up this week with 2 freaking drivers in the bag. On purpose.
Just like at Merion, Phil is going to outthink himself and FIGJAM another chance at the Open. He hit it like crap and still won on this course a few months ago. Use experience Phil, and stop trying to be smarter than everybody else

Love him too but he is way too much of a Dave Pelz disciple. I think that has fricked him way too many times.

His birthday
Fathers Day
Pebble
If he stays out of his own way this week and hits fairways he has a really good shot. Maybe his last good chance.
He's come so close so many times. He deserves it. I believe he can get it done if he plays well.

Been a Phil fan since the mid 90’s. He was one of the very few players from that era that didn’t just lay down and die when Tiger came along. He elevated his game vs Tiger. Didn’t always win, especially early on, but he took him to the limit a lot of times. From 2005 on, I think he’s gotten the best of Tiger quite a bit.
45 tour wins and 5 majors is one hell of a career. Here’s hoping he gets the Slam!

He's like the 4th best player sans Tiger of that era. Phil should get on his knees and kiss the ring of Titleist for creating the ProV1.
But I do love the absurd character he's turned into in the last year or so.

By what metric? Because you’re certainly not reaching this conclusion based on wins, major wins, money, consistency or longevity.
Vijay or Els would be the only other 2 even in the conversation and Phil has done more for longer than either of them.
Phil is 9th all time in PGA Tour Wins and T-12 all time in Major Wins in the deepest era in the history of the sport. He’s in the Pantheon of all-time greats (sometimes despite himself and he should have a much higher major total)

Social Media has unleashed a Phil that's hard not to like.

Look at his career before and after the ProV1. He's still a hall of famer without it, but he'd have a career arch more in line with Zach Johnson than Tom Watson. He'd have 20 or 25 wins and maybe 2 or 3 majors, imo.

Duval without the wrist injury and my hot take is without the ProV Justin Leonard would have like 8 majors.
Again, I like Mickelson, but the advancement of the golf ball did wonders for him.

A win would be a better story than Tiger winning the Masters ... the Tiger fans can suck it!!!??

What? So you’re basing your evaluation of Phil’s skill level relative to other players in the Tiger era based on a hypothetical of a piece of tech not being invented?
Tiger was an early adopter of the urethane ball too... he was one of the only players to have it in the bag in 2000/2001. So you could say if it hadn’t come around, then he doesn’t win the Tiger Slam, doesn’t set all those records. But there again, it’s a hypothetical. What if Hogan doesn’t miss 2 years of his prime for WW2 and then doesn’t get in the wreck limiting his appearances? He prob wins 100/20. We don’t know. All we have are the records. Phil’s is top 10-12 all time, and certainly better than Els, Duval, Singh, Leonard, Harrington, O’Meara, etc..

Yes, it's just a conversation.

No he didn't. He played the Titleist until the year before the ProV1 then went to the Nike ball. He went from 1st, I think, (too 3 I know) in distance to like 25 yards behind Mickelson, Els, and Singh who went from as low as 50 to around top 5. The next season tiger then switched to the new Nike ball that wasn't trash and went back to being the longest guy on Tour.
Start at the 55 minute mark for a delve into the stats

I agree, in large part because of the invention of the ProV1 and the technology arms race.

I like conversation, but for the sake of argument here, your original contention was that Phil was the 4th best not named Tiger of the Tiger Era. Then you agreed with me that he was better than Duval, Singh, Els, Harrington, Leonard and O’Meara. So who are the three you’re contending we’re better than Phil?

I agreed that he's had a better career then they have. I think Els and Singh were definitely better and Duval was well on his way before injuries derailed him. I wouldnt make a big stink if you wanted to put him at 3, at that point you're really just arguing semantics and personal preference.
The entire point of my post was the ProV elevated Phil from a very above average player to an all time great.
