I have the Dooky Chase cookbook. She was a New Orleans institution; the Queen of Creole Cuisine

quote:
In New Orleans, Leah Chase has been lauded as a leader, an inspiration, even an emblem of her city’s better self.
But through it all she has remained a chef, forever directing her staff and greeting her guests, her hands always busy preparing the trinity, stirring the gumbo.
Now, finally, those hands are still.
Chase died Saturday, surrounded by her family, according to a family spokesperson.
She was 96.
Through her long life, Chase was known as an icon of the civil rights movement, a patron of the arts and a mentor. Her family knew her as a matriarch with high standards and deep affection. And she was always and forever known for her way with New Orleans food.

God bless her. My wife had an opportunity to go Dooky Chase for lunch about two weeks ago and was hoping to see her. She was not there. They said she was not doing well. She was a New Orleans icon. What a great lady.

She was a special one. Very sweet every time I met her.

Well, she had some long innings as they say. Living to be 96 is no small feat, and to do so while heading one of the better known restaurants in N.O. is a hell of an accomplishment.
I know she will be missed by many and was well respected in the restaurant business.

I’ve eaten lunch in her restaurant 3 or 4 times a year my whole adult life. All of the coverage of her death is a testament to her good fortune while she lived her life on earth, one that she went through with effortless grace. May god bless her lovely soul.

Got to go into her kitchen about 15 years ago and watched her cut sausage for a gumbo.
Her husband complained to me once that they could never get financially strong because Leah was constantly giving her food away to people that couldn’t afford it.
What an icon.

Wow! This is a great, historical loss for our city and country. Leah was one of the all time greats that knew more about cooking and entertaining customers than practically anyone else alive. The list of all time greats that came through her (Dooky Chase) doors reads like an honor roll of world history. I can still remember my first time eating her gumbo back in the early '70's.
God rest you Leah.....you truly changed the world!
