HOUSTON -- Never one to be the least bit satisfied, Astros third baseman Alex Bregman has been working on a few swing adjustments in recent days. And just in time for the Astros.
Bregman, starting at designated hitter, blasted a pair of home runs -- giving him a club-record 12 for the month of May and an American League-leading 17 -- to lead the Astros to a 9-6 win over the Cubs on Tuesday night at Minute Maid ParkThe two homers tie Bregman with Springer, Eddie Rosario of the Twins and Gary Sanchez of the Yankees for the AL lead, with 17 apiece. They also helped the Astros overcome five Cubs homers -- including three solo shots in the second inning off Astros starter Corbin Martin -- and win for the 19th time in the past 24 games.
“[Bregman is] such an emotional leader for us, especially on a day where we didn’t feel very good going into the game with the news of Correa and news of Altuve,” Hinch said. “He’s DH’ing, he’s grinding. We’re trying to get through these games and get to that off-day [Thursday]. It can’t come fast enough, but we don’t want to just concede games and lose, and he provides that spark with the at-bats, the posture, the walks, the intensity he conducts in his at-bats.
"He doesn't love DH’ing, but maybe tonight will change his mind.”LINK

Knew he'd be good, but never thought he'd have the power numbers he does...

I'm curious as to why he is DH?

Probably to give him some rest. This is normal in MLB (in the AL anyway).

He broke the New Mexico state record for home runs in high school. He has always had a lot of power.
He came to LSU at the wrong time with the bad bats AND the non-flat seam baseball.

On a normal rest day he'd be sitting out completely, but the Astros are dealing with some serious injuries right now with Altuve, Correa, Springer and Diaz all out. And so, slotting him into the DH spot would be the best they could do to give him some rest.

Guy will never make it in the MLB

He came to LSU at the wrong time with the bad bats AND the non-flat seam baseball.

“In college, I tried to hit the ball on the ground and low line drives. Up here, there aren’t a lot of hits on the ground with guys like Carlos Correa and Andrelton Simmons playing shortstop. Now I try to not hit ground balls.”
The ink had barely dried on his contract when he was told to alter his approach. Organizations typically let first-year players finish the season before suggesting changes, but Bregman was told “right away” that something else was expected. Before he could get his feet wet at the professional level, he had to “learn on the fly how to drive a baseball.”

It doesn't hurt that the Crawford Boxes in left field are tailor-made for his swing.

Because the Astros have been obnoxiously resting players only to have them get hurt and out of the lineup anyway. Springer, Altuve, and Correa are currently out. I fully expect Bregman to be next and he already had to miss a couple games last month.

And he wasn’t asked to hit homers in college. I believe, IIRC, that he worked on changing his launch angle to hit more line drives in college. Don’t know where I saw that but I may possibly be wrong about this comment.

He was at LSU at the wrong time.
He hit so many at LSU to the warning track.
They had to make an effort to not hit fly balls.
It had actually hurt their development from a hitting standpoint.
You talk to Bregman now, and even he admits college baseball did not prepare him as much as minor league ball would have other than from a maturity standpoint but Bregman is one of the few that came to LSU and never stopped working.
Stature wise, I don't think he's on PED's. He's always been a small guy and that's not changing. His command of the strike zone is really good. He just does a really good job of squaring up in most of his plate appearances and understands how they pitch him, that's hard to teach. If not for that high school injury, he never would have made it to LSU.

The Stros are on a roll. I want to say they are 16-5 in their last 21 games.
And just in case it hasn't been mentioned, Bregman also tied a team record with his HR last night.. 11 HRs in the month of May.
